| Hampstead Heath (TQ273866) (website) | Habitat: large area of open space with a number of ponds and wooded areas. | Species: All year: common waterbirds on the ponds; Lesser Spotted Woodpecker; common woodland birds. Summer: Common Tern; occasional Grasshopper Warbler, Reed warbler, Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Lesser Whitethroat, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff, Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher. Passage: the occasional raptor, such as Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Osprey, Hobby; Woodcock, plus other odd waders flying over; passerines including Wood Lark, Tree Pipit, Wheater, Whinchat, Redstart, Ring Ouzel, Wood Warbler, Firecrest, Pied Flycatcher and Brambling. Winter: Water Rail; Stonechat, Fieldfare, Redwing, Siskin and Redpoll. Rarities: have included Little Bittern, Honey Buzzard, Montagu's Harrier, Wryneck, Richard's Pipit, Golden Oriole, Red-backed Shrike and Serin. |
