Enfield Chase   (TQ290985) Habitat: open farmland

 

Species: All year: Sky Lark, common woodland birds. Summer: Whitethroat, Blackcap and Willow Warbler. Passage: Woodcock; Tree Pipit, Wheatear, Whinchat, Stonechat, occasionally Redstart, Ring Ouzel, Brambling. Winter: Fieldfare, Redwing and finches. Rarities: have included Wryneck and Short-toed Lark.
Grovelands Lake/Park   (TQ305944) (website) Habitat: lake surrounded by wooded areas.

 

Species: All year: Mandarin Duck; common water and woodland birds. Summer: Whitethroat, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler. Passage: Redstart a possibility. Winter: Goosander; Fieldfare, Redwing and finches.

Habitat: Large concrete banked reservoirs - north of the Walthamstow reservoirs complex. 

Access to King George V Res  is by way of key and permit obtained from Thames Water at Walthamstow Reservoir, Ferry Lane, Walthamstow. E17.(tel. 0208 808 1527)

There is NO access to Wm Girling Res

Species: All year: Common waterbirds. Summer: the site can be quite, though anything could just turn up. Black Redstart are present in the area. Passage:  Red-necked, Slavonian or Black-necked Grebes; Leaches Petrel (autumn - rare); Common Scoter, Scaup, and Red-breasted Merganser; the occasional Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Hobby; most common wader species pass through, plus occasional Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Knot, Sanderling, Little Stint, Godwits, Whimbrel and Turnstone; the occasional Pomarine or Arctic Skua; Kittiwake, Little Gulls, Sandwich, Arctic, Little, or Black Terns; occasional Little Auk (autumn - rare); plus passerines on the embankment, such as Larks, Pipits (including Rock), Wheatear, Whinchat and Black Redstart. Winter: (especially after easterlies or harsh conditions): Divers; Red-necked, Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes (often overwinter); Bewick Swans; Brent Geese; Scaup, Common Scoter, Goosander  and Red-breasted Merganser: occasional Water Pipit. Wm Girling Res has a large Gull roost that can contain Mediterranean, Glaucous or Iceland Gulls, which can be seen at the adjacent King George V Res. Rarities: have included  Sabine's Gull, White-winged Tern and Citrine Wagtail.
Ponders End Lake            (TQ362946) Habitat: An old sewage works developed into a lake within a recreational area that forms part of the Lea Valley Pickett's Lock Leisure Center Species: Summer: the area can be quite. Passage/winter:  Occasionally birds from the adjacent William Girling reservoir can stray onto the Lake, including Gulls prior to roosting. Rarities: have included  Ring-billed Gull.
Trent Country Park   (TQ290970) (website) Habitat: woodland with areas used for argiculture and small ponds. Species: All year: Mandarin Duck, Stock Dove, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Sky Lark and Yellowhammer. Summer: Nightingale; Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher and Marsh Tit. Passage: the occasional raptor such as Buzzard and Hobby; Turtle Dove; Tree Pipit, Wheater, Whinchat, Stonechat, Redstart, the occasional Pied Flycatcher and Firecrest. Winter: Fieldfare and Redwing, and Finches.
