Amwell GP    (TL380125) (website) Habitat: Gravel pit, with reeds and mature trees, developed for wildlife. Species: All year: Ruddy Duck. Summer: most common waterbirds can be found; Hobby; along with Sedge and Reed Warblers, Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler. Passage: occasional Black-necked Grebe,  Red-necked or Slavonian Grebes; Garganey,  raptors such as Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Osprey, Hobby; wader species pass through in small numbers with the occasional as Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Dunlin, Whimbrel and Turnstone; the occasional Little Gull, Sandwich, Arctic or Black Terns; plus passerines such as Larks, Pipits, Wagtails, Wheatear, Whinchat and the occasional Redstart. Winter: occasional Red-necked, Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes; Bittern; Scaup, Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser.
Broxbourne Woods            (TL340080) (website) Habitat: Mature mixed woodland with some open areas Species: All year: Common Woodland species.  Summer: Hobby, Tree Pipit and other Heathland species; Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff, Willow Warbler and Redpoll. Passage: occasional raptor, such as Buzzard;  plus passerines, including the occasional Redstart, Wood Warbler, Pied Flycatcher and Firecrest. Winter: Winter finches, such as Brambling and occasionally Crossbills. 
Cheshunt GPs (TL370030) Habitat: Mature deep water gravel pit, with reeds and mature trees. Species: Summer: most common waterbirds can be found; Hobby; along with Sedge and Reed Warblers, Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler. Passage: occasional raptor such as Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Osprey, Hobby; plus passerines such as Wheatear, Whinchat and the occasional Redstart. Winter: Bittern (at the Bittern watchpoint); occasional Smew or Goosander, Long-eared Owl, thrushes and finches. 
Hilfield Park Reservoir     (TQ158959) (website) Habitat: reservoir, set in a semi-natural setting, with one end with a concrete bank, reeds and woodland.

NO public access. Open to members of Herts & Middlesex WT

Passage:  Black-necked Grebe, occasiuonally Red-necked or Slavonian Grebes; the odd Garganey, Common Scoter, Scaup, and Red-breasted Merganser; the occasional raptor such as Osprey, Hobby; wader species pass through in small numbers with the occasional as Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Little Stint, Dunlin, Whimbrel and Turnstone; the occasional Little Gull, Sandwich, Arctic, Little, or Black Terns; occasional Little Auk (autumn - rare); plus passerines on the embankment, such as Larks, Pipits (including Rock), Wagtails, Wheatear, Whinchat and the occasional Redstart. Winter: (especially after easterlies or harsh conditions): Divers; Red-necked, Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes; Bewick's Swans; Brent Geese; Scaup, Common Scoter, Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser. This sites has a Gull roost  that can contain Mediterranean Gulls. Rarities: have included Blue-winged Teal, Serin and Little Bunting.
Northaw Great Wood               (TL285044) Habitat: Mature mixed woodland.

 

 

Species: All year: Common Woodland species including Marsh Tit.  Summer: Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff, Willow Warbler and Redpoll. Passage: occasional raptor, such as Buzzard;  plus passerines, including the occasional Redstart, Wood Warbler, and Pied Flycatcher. Winter: Winter thrushes and finches.
Prae Wood            (TQ120070) Habitat: Mature mixed woodland. Species: All year: Buzzard. Summer: Hobby; Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff, Willow Warbler and Redpoll. Passage: passerines, including the occasional Redstart, and Pied Flycatcher. Winter: Winter thrushes and finches, such as Brambling and occasionally Crossbills.
Rye House Marsh        (TL383103) (website)   Rye Meads          (TL388102) (website)   Habitat: old sewage works, with disused filter beds, lagoons and reeds.

Rye House Marsh is an RSPB reserve. The remainder of the area, Rye Meads SF has restricted access

Tyttenhanger GP                 (TQ191865) Habitat: Gravel pit, with deep water areas and shallow sandy margins and pools.

Winter: occasional Goosander. Rarities: have included Lesser Scaup and Short-toed Lark.
Whippendell Wood               (TQ075977) Habitat: Mature deciduous woodland.

 

 

 

Species: All year: Common Woodland species, plus Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Marsh Tit and Hawfinch, though no Hawfinch have been reported in recent times.  Summer: Blackcap, Chiff-chaff, and Willow Warbler. Passage: occasional raptor, such as Buzzard;  plus passerines, including the occasional Redstart, Wood Warbler, and Pied Flycatcher. Winter: Winter thrushes and finches.
