Habitat: woodland with some open areas

 

 

 

 

 

Species: All year: Mandarin Duck and Woodcock. Summer: most common waterbirds can be found, Tree Pipit, Nightingale, Sedge and Reed Warblers, Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler, with the occasional Grasshopper Warbler; and Spotted Flycatcher  Passage:  the occasional raptor, such as Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Hobby, passerines including Wheatear, Whinchat, and the occasional Redstart and Firecrest. Winter: Thrushes and Finches. Rarities: have included Little Bittern.

Habitat: Concrete banked reservoir - several of the large West London reservoirs. 

 

NO public access to Island Barn or Queen Elizabeth Reservoirs.

ACCESS to Walton Reservoir is by way of Thames Water Birdwatching permit.

 

 

Species: Summer: Common Tern; otherwise the site can very quite, though anything could just turn up. Passage:  Red-necked, Slavonian or Black-necked Grebes; Leaches Petrel (autumn - rare); Garganey, Common Scoter, Scaup, and Red-breasted Merganser; the occasional pator such as Osprey, Hobby; most wader species pass through such as Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Little Stint, Dunlin, Whimbrel and Turnstone; the occasional Pomarine or Arctic Skua; Little Gulls, Sandwich, Arctic, Little, or Black Terns; occasional Little Auk (autumn - rare); plus passerines on the embankment, such as Larks, Pipits (including Rock), Wagtails, Wheatear, Whinchat and the occasional Black Redstart. Winter: (especially after easterlies or harsh conditions): Divers; Red-necked, Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes; Bewick's Swans; Brent Geese; Scaup, Common Scoter, Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser. Theses sites have Gull roosts (the main one being on QE II reservoir) that can contain Mediterranean, Glaucous or Iceland Gulls. Rarities: have included Mediterranean Shearwater, Ring-necked Duck, White-rumped Sandpiper. 
King George VI Reservoir     (TQ041732)

Habitat: Concrete banked reservoirs - several of the large West London reservoirs. 

NO public access to King George VI or Wraysbury Reservoirs.

ACCESS to Staines Reservoir is by way of the public footpath the splits the North & South basins.

Passage: Divers, Red-necked, Slavonian or Black-necked Grebes; Leaches Petrel (autumn - rare); Common Scoter, Scaup, and Red-breasted Merganser; the occasional Osprey, Hobby; most wader species pass through such as Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Little Stint, Dunlin, Whimbrel and Turnstone; the occasional Pomarine or Arctic Skua; Little Gulls, Sandwich, Arctic, Little, or Black Terns; occasional Little Auk (autumn - rare); plus passerines on the embankment, such as Larks, Pipits (including Rock), Wheatear, and the occasional Black Redstart. Stanwell Moor            (TQ036745)

Habitat: an area of unimproved grassland with shallow flashes, and old gravel workings at Stanwell Moor

 

 

 

Species: All year: Ring-necked Parakeet  Summer: most common waterbirds can be found, along with Garganey; Hobby; occasional breeding Little Ringed and Ringer Plover; Redshank; all the common warblers can be found in the surrounding vegetation. Passage: ducks such as Garganey and Pintail; the occasional raptor, such as Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Hobby; with the occasional Short-eared Owl; plus passerines, including Wheater, Whinchat, Redstart, Ring Ouzel, Pied Flycatcher and Firecrest. Winter: Goosander on the river, Jack Snipe, Water Pipit and Stonechat. Rarities: have included Spoonbill, Long-billed Dowitcher and Pectoral Sandpiper.
Thorpe Park   (TQ030681) Habitat: old gravel workings, with larger areas devoted to Thorpe Park theme park (closed in winter) or watersports. Some areas are undisturbed in winter. Species: Summer: most common waterbirds can be found, Sedge and Reed Warblers, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler. Passage: the occasional raptor, such as Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Hobby, passerines including Wheater, Whinchat, and the occasional Redstart and Fireccrest. Winter: very occasionally one of the araer Grebe's; Smew Goosander; with overwintering Chiff-chaff.
