| Epping Forest (TQ400945) (website) | Habitat: Mature old woodland, with ponds (only the Southern part of the Forest lies in this Borough, the major areas lying within Essex). | Species: All year: Mandarin. Summer: Woodcock, Tree Pipit, Nightingale, Redstart, Sedge and Reed Warblers, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiff-chaff and Willow Warbler, Marsh Tit. Passage: the occasional raptor, such as Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Hobby, passerines including Wheater, Whinchat, and the occasional Pied Flycatcher and Fireccrest. Winter: Thrushes and Finches. Rarities: have included Olive-backed Pipit, Naumann's Thrush and Short-toed Treecreeper. |

Passage: the occasional raptor, such as Marsh Harrier, Osprey, Hobby; with the occasional Short-eared Owl; plus passerines, including Wheater, Whinchat, the occasional Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Firecrest. Winter: Water Rail; occasional Short-eared Owl, Stonechat, Fieldfare and Redwing, and finches. Rarities: have included Subalpine Warbler. |

Habitat: A complex containing a series of small man made reservoirs, together with several moderate sized concrete banked reservoirs, some of which contain well vegetated islands. Together with filter beds at the adjacent water treatment works.
Access is by way permit obtained from Thames Water at Walthamstow Reservoir, Ferry Lane, Walthamstow. E17.(tel. 0208 808 1527) Note there is NO ACCESS to Banbury Reservoir.

Species: Summer: the site can be quite, though anything could just turn up. The site has breeding Cormorants and a large Heronry. The occasional Tree Sparrow can still be found. Passage: Occasional Red-necked, Slavonian or Black-necked Grebes; Common Scoter, Scaup, and Red-breasted Merganser; the occasional Osprey, Hobby; most common wader species pass through in samll numbers, plus the occasional Oystercatcher, Grey Plover, Sanderling, Little Stint, Godwits, Whimbrel and Turnstone; the occasional Kittiwake, Little Gulls, Sandwich, Arctic, Little, or Black Terns; plus passerines in the surrounding vegetation, such as Larks, Pipits (including Rock), Chats and Ring Ouzel. Winter: Occasional Diver; Red-necked, Slavonian and Black-necked Grebes; Bewick Swans; Scaup, Common Scoter, Smew, Goosander and Red-breasted Merganser; Mediterranean Gull; Long-eared and Short-eared Owls (uncommon). Rarities: have included Green and Blue-winged Teal, Sabine's Gull, White-winged Tern and Hoopoe. |
