Match Report – U14s – YEL Cup Final – 13 May 08 - Parkdale 0 v Calverton 1

CUP & DOUBLE WINNERS!!!

The Colts won their Cup Final game against Parkdale through a goal from Wes Collins just 3 minutes from the end of normal, to take the spoils in the YEL U14s Sunday Cup Final played at Kimberley Town on 13 May.

It would be fair to say that they thoroughly deserved their win, having dominated for most of the match, especially in the second half, and it would also be fair to say that Parkdale played very well and made them work exceptionally hard for the win.

In fact, it was Parkdale who had the better possession during the first 15-20 minutes, with Calverton slowly getting to grips with play after that, and going from strength to strength.

But the possible turning point came after around 20 minutes, when a top drawer save from Ryan Smith maintained his clean sheet, and thwarted Parkdale. The chance acted as a kick up the backside that the lads needed, and they gained the ascendancy from then on.

The Parkdale keeper was much the busier of the two, and he pulled off some excellent stops throughout.

Greg Tempest could have opened the scoring when he spooned a chance over the crossbar from close range, and a few half chances towards the end of the first half started to show what was to come in the second half. But the stalemate still had to be broken as the lads trudged off after the first half.

Half Time Parkdale 0 v Calverton 0

Playing with the slight slope of the Kimberley ground in the second half, the Calverton defence soaked any chances that came at them, and Parkdale simply failed to break down the Calverton back line, despite all sorts of tactics!! Ryan Smith simply didn’t have a single save to make during the whole second half, but still the Parkdale defence also held the Calverton front line of Lewis ‘Dobbo’ Dobbins and Luke ‘Westy’ West in check.

Greg Tempest and Joe Meakin playing wide midfield were starting to get some decent crosses into the Parkdale area, and the central midfield pairing of Felix ‘Oggie’ Hogg and Macca Hayes were dominating proceedings.

The Calverton defence of Mason White, Costas Charalambous, Jason Moon and Lewis Wilson were outstanding on the night too.

An injury to Joe Meakin on the ring flank forced a substitution, and Wes Collins was introduced onto the right wing – the change was to prove crucial. The tackle on Joe being just outside the penalty area, though nothing came from the free kick.

With just 10 minutes remaining, Lewis Dobbins fired in a cross cum shot across the area that hit the inside of the far post before being scrambled away by Parkdale. Felix Hogg, Macca Hayes and Joe Meakin had already seen efforts go just wide.

Extra time loomed, but another cross from the left bounced teasingly just inside the 6 yard box, and a moment’s hesitation from the Parkdale keeper and a defender allowed Wes Collins to nip in between the two of them and nod home from close range. With only 3 minutes left, there was no way back for Parkdale, and with all substitutions used to eat up the final minutes (what?), Calverton deservedly held their nerve for a great win, and to cap a great season and take the Cup to go with the League success.

A huge well done to all the lads on a fantastic season.

Match Report – U14s – YEL League Division 1 – 27 April 08 - Wollaton Hall 3 v Calverton 1

CHAMPIONS!!!

An inconsequential match as it turned out due to the lads winning the League earlier in the week, allowing some players to rest or play cricket! Even so, Calverton dominated much of the game, and it was Wollaton who opened the scoring against the run of play. Joe Meakin played in just about every position during this match, and he went close with a couple of first half efforts.

Half Time - Wollaton Hall 1 v Calverton 0

Some weird decisions today, from the willing volunteer, so in many respects, it was good that nothing depended on the result, for all concerned. Mason Bramwell levelled early in the second half, but following a number of substitutions and players in unfamiliar roles, Wollaton scored two late goals to be gifted 3 points – our present lads! Enjoy!

An all round superb season for the lads as they now have a little bit of a break before the YEL Cup Final on 13 May at Kimberley Town.

Match Report – U14s – YEL League Division 1 – 24 April 08 - East Valley 0 v Calverton 2

CHAMPIONS!!!

At last!!! This hasn’t sunk in yet! We have always said it was down to our own performances – regardless of what other teams did – and so it has proved. This was a fantastic performance from the lads as they completely bossed East Valley in every department. Paul, the East Valley manager said as much at the end, and well done to most of the East Valley lads as they congratulated Calverton on becoming champions too.

So – to the performance – and what a performance. Right from the off, Calverton were the team looking most likely to score. Even with Ryan Smith injured from the Colts goal, and with Greg Tempest between the sticks, East Valley were limited to only a couple of chances during the whole game. But the Colts could easily have been 5 up by half time. With the wind at their backs, they pressed East Valley back for the whole of the first half. Dobbo went close with a couple of shots, Westy had a goal ruled out for offside, and Macca Hayes rounded the keeper, only to see his shot hit a post from a tight angle. But you could sense that this was an unstoppable tide coming at East Valley and it would only be a matter of time before the Colts broke the deadlock.

The opening goal came on 20 minutes with a wicked corner from Joe Meakin that Lewis Dobbins sidefoot volleyed home from 4 yards. It was all the lads deserved. But with a strong wind and a low sun on the horizon, I always felt a second goal was needed before half time. And the lads had to wait until 3 minutes before half time before it came. A superb headed pass from Lewis Wilson took out two East Valley players and put in Joe Meakin behind the East Valley defence. He flew down the right wing and played in a low hard cross that was met sweetly on the volley by Lewis Dobbins for his second.

Half Time - East Valley 0 v Calverton 2

East Valley had to throw caution to the wind in the second half but the Colts defence held out against the route 1 football they faced. Despite that, East Valley came closest to scoring in this half, and twice calls from Greg in goal weren’t heeded and both Mason White and Costas Charalambous were a little fortunate that East Valley failed to capitalise on the chances.

Desperation started to creep more and more into the East Valley game as they simply pumped the ball down the middle, and the Colts stood strong against anything that came.

Fewer chances for the Colts in the second half, but the hard work had been done, and this was a very professional performance against the side second in the league.

The win crowned the season nicely, and a good celebration was enjoyed by all the lads at the end, especially when piling onto the wizard ‘Special One’ manager, Deano. I can exclusively reveal that a Russian multi-billionaire has already been on the phone with a megabucks contract offer, but it could depend on whether he’s willing to fork out £100 million for Cristiano Ronaldo too.

A thoroughly deserved win, and a thoroughly deserved Championship – WELL DONE LADS!

Greg Tempest – excellent performance in the Colts goal with little to do in the first half, but pulled off a couple of great saves in the second. Held everything.

Lewis Wilson – outstanding at right back, great throw-ins, deceptively strong in the air and in the tackle, and helped lay on one of the goals.

Mason White – a man in a youth’s body! So strong, and fast. An extra captain on the pitch at times. Superb performance covering and mopping up everything that came his way.

Costas Charalambous – played, and was desperate to play, despite feeling slightly unwell. Coughed a lot! Was a little out of sorts tonight, but strong and fast. Not much gets past Costas – except the ball every so often!

Jason Moon – outstanding performance. Didn’t put a foot wrong throughout the game, and went about his job quietly but very effectively. Marshalled the defence superbly and read the game very well.

Joe Meakin – a contender for Man of the Match, as he set up both goals, and was a menace down the right flank. His defensive duties were also very solid and has formed a great understanding on the right wing with Lewis Wilson.

Felix Hogg – another gritty, strong performance from this lad. Managed to find time and space in a crowded midfield, and bossed central midfield with Macca Hayes. Completely outplayed their opposite numbers from East Valley. Covered in defence to shore it up for the last 10 minutes after Costas came off.

Macca Hayes – a very strong performance bossing midfield with Oggie. Hit the post after an excellent run, and so strong with the ball. Has a fantastic ability to go past players or to hold up play and shields so well.

Matt Platt – solid performance from Matt on the left side of midfield to make up an outstanding midfield pack on the hunt. Prevented any threat down that flank from East Valley.

Luke West – worked his socks off up front. Had a goal disallowed, and didn’t give the defence anytime at all on the ball, especially important in the second half. Held the ball up really well – as usual – and a constant thron in East Valley’s side.

Lewis Dobbins – Captain Marvel – saved his season’s best performance especially for the night it really mattered! Scorer of both goals, and showed his strength and pace, especially in the second half to prevent East Valley from thinking they were going to get anything from the game. Took a knock midway through the second half, so will be saved for the YEL Cup Final.

Chris Heathcote – tackled like a tiger when he came on, battled and chased. Broke up any passes down the left wing and got into the box through sheer hard work a couple of times.

Wes Anderson – worked the defence well and linked very well with Joe Meakin on the right. Didn’t give the back four of East Valley any time, making them content to knock the ball out for throw-ins or corners, which allowed Calverton to increase the pressure.

Mason Bramwell – did exceptionally well when introduced and had a very good long range effort saved well by the keeper. Another one who worked hard on fresh legs to give the home defence a hard time as they pressed hard for something from the game.

An all round superb performance from Calverton – to be crowned Champions.

Match Report – U14s – YEL League Division 1 – 20 April 08 - Wollaton Sports 1 v Calverton 2

Hard work – very hard work! On possibly the worst ground in the League, never mind about the Division – the Colts eventually managed to grind out this win. It takes them back to the top of Division 1, after East Valley had temporarily leap-frogged the lads due to a morning kick-off in their game.

And to be fair to Wollaton, they have been beaten by both East Valley and Calverton in the space of a few days, and they were so close! Today, Calverton played the better football, but there would have been more room on the back of a postage stamp at times in midfield, as the number of bodies made it extremely difficult for either side to play football.

In the first half, the better chances fell to Calverton, but they could not get to grips with the final ball, so that any chances that came along had to be scored. The miss of the season (sorry Dobbo), came in the first half, when Lewis Dobbins somehow failed to score, even after two great chances, through a missed shot, and then a good save by the Wollaton keeper. He was to make up for it later though!

On such a small pitch, it was easy to turn defence into attack within seconds, and both sides tried to do that. Wollaton had a goal disallowed for offside, a correct decision, and no complaints. So a tight match, similar in many respects to the recent Cup game between the two sides. But half time came with no score.

Half Time - Wollaton Sports 0 v Calverton 0

The Colts took the lead quite early in the second half following a great corner from Joe Meakin. The cross invited Luke West to flick it on and it nestled into the top corner. But still this wasn’t enough to secure the points, as Wollaton forced a free kick, and a simple misunderstanding in the Colts defence saw one player – you know who you are – drop back and play a handful of attackers onside, and a guided header found its way into the far post with Colts keeper Greg Tempest unable to make up the ground.

But the Colts have not found themselves at the top of the league without battling through times like this, and captain Dobbo rallied his troops, rolled up his sleeves (metaphorically), and took the game to Wollaton. The Colts pressed Wollaton hard and started to peg the home side back, but Wollaton still looked dangerous on the break. The winner followed another excellent piece of work by Joe Meakin, and then Luke West, and as Westy saw his shot parried, it fell into the path of Dobbo – and he headed home for what turned out to be the winner.

A difficult game, but just about the right result over the whole match. Wollaton lost to East Valley earlier in the week in a game they should have won, whereas today was about the right score overall.

Scorers – Luke West, Lewis Dobbins.

Match Report – U14s – YEL League Division 1 – 13 April 08 - Calverton 2 v Toton 0

As this match progressed, there was a kind of inevitability about the final outcome. With Ryan Smith in the Colts goal restricted to making just one save of any note during the whole match, the Colts dominated for most of the game.

But despite the first half domination, it was the ball in the final quarter of the pitch that always seemed to let the lads down, as chances drifted away following some lovely build up work from defence and through midfield.

The defence was really solid throughout, and along with Ryan kept the third consecutive clean sheet. An early injury to Westy up front as he twisted an ankle, meant an early appearance for Greg Tempest, who had not started as he nursed a knock of his own. Jason Moon had an outstanding game at the heart of the Colts defence, as did Lewis Wilson, Costas Charalambous and Mason White. They dealt with any threat for the whole game, protecting their keeper well.

Macca Hayes was so strong today in centre midfield, and ‘Oggie’ again worked his socks off, and won most of his midfield battles. Out wide, Joe Meakin put in some great interplay and crosses, and with first Chris Heathcote, and then Wes Anderson working well down the left wing, Toton were back on their heels for much of the game.

Up front, Dobbo continually put pressure on the Toton defence, and Greg also linked well up front when he came on.

Mason Bramwell scored a good goal to seal the win, and had another good headed chance go just over. Matt Platt played some nice passes in midfield, and all round this was a good solid performance that got the job done.

With the final ball just failing to test Toton in the first half, the Colts finished level at the end of the period.

Half Time - Calverton 0 v Toton 0

It wasn’t too long in the second half before the Colts started to press again, and a great strike from ‘Oggie’ gave the Colts the deserved lead. It was well into the second half before Mason Bramwell wrong-footed the keeper with a better finish than Darius Vassell the day before!

Some better play in the second half, and Toton started to feel how Canute must have felt trying to keep the tide at bay. The win takes the Colts 5 points clear at the top of Division 1, and with the points in the bag, the pressure on the chasing teams could be too much to bear – well let’s hope so!

Full Time - Calverton 2 v Toton 0

Scorers – Felix Hogg, Mason Bramwell.

Match Report – U14s – YEL Cup Semi-Final – 6 April 08 - Calverton 3 v Wollaton Sports Pumas 0

The Colts forged their way into the YEL Cup Final with this 3-0 win over Wollaton Sports Pumas. In the end, the win was deserved, but Wollaton played some great football, and had the lads chasing shadows at times, especially during the first 20 minutes. The visitors opened the brighter of the teams, and enjoyed greater possession to begin with, but they were unable to break down the Calverton defence, or beat Ryan Smith in the Colts goal, being restricted to half chances in the most part. One long range effort hit the Colts crossbar, but it appeared Ryan would have had it if it had looked like going in.

An early injury to Joe Meakin forced some rearrangements in the Colts side, and they gradually forced their way into contention. Lewis Dobbins fired a shot just wide, as did Macca Hayes, and Greg Tempest also went close as the tide began to turn in the 10 minutes leading up to half-time.

Ryan Smith made a good finger-tip save from a shot across goal but with relatively few chances in this tight, important game, it meant that neither team managed to break the deadlock before half time.

Half Time - Calverton 0 v Wollaton Sports 0

The Colts took the game by the scruff of the neck from the start of the second half, and pegged Wollaton back for longer and longer periods. When the breakthrough came, it was Greg Tempest on the left wing who fired home from a great cross from Wes Anderson.

The pressure was beginning to tell, and a slightly fortuitous penalty was awarded to Calverton, though we’ll take that as these things appear to even out over the season, and we have been due a bit of luck. Luke ‘Westy’ West calmly put away his spot kick, and Wollaton realised it was going to be a long way back if they were to get anything from the game. But it was the Colts who maintained the pressure and a great cross from a corner was headed home by Lewis ‘Dobbo’ Dobbins at the far post to seal the win, and progress to the final of the YEL Cup.

Jason Moon did an outstanding job in the second half, as did Felix Hogg as he ‘got amongst it’, and Westy ran his socks off and held the ball up superbly.

The defence worked very well as a unit and any chances that Wollaton made were swallowed by Ryan Smith in goal as he maintained yet another clean sheet.

Another strong performance from the Colts to get to the final of this competition – well done to all the lads.

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 30 March 08 - Calverton 4 v Wollaton Hall 0

This result takes the Colts to the top of Division 1 for the first time since early season, and as we really get into the business end of the season, it was a pleasure to watch the team today.

They quickly put the disappointment of Thursday’s defeat behind them, against a big strong Wollaton Hall side. The opening 15 minutes were pretty even, with neither side forging a clear opening. But then a crisply struck shot from Macca Hayes gave the Colts the lead, and it clearly served to settle any nerves they might have been feeling. Playing some glorious passing football at times, the lads started to dominate the game more and more, and when Luke ‘Westy’ West calmly sidefooted home after 25 minutes, the lads had clearly started to enjoy themselves.

Joe Meakin in midfield was spraying the ball from wing to wing, and Macca Hayes was back to his dominant self in midfield. It hardly seems fair to single any player out today, as every one played well, and some played very well.

Wollaton Hall were promoted from Division 2 at the end of last season, and have acquitted themselves very well this year, picking up points on a regular basis, but have just lacked a little consistency. Today’s result was their heaviest defeat of the season.

Half Time - Calverton 2 v Wollaton Hall 0

In the second half, the Colts again enjoyed themselves and Westy scored his second and the Colts third with a beautifully placed shot into the top corner after a lovely ball from Costas Charalambous.

And it was Costas himself who topped off the performance with his first goal of the season midway through the second half.

The Colts almost added a fifth when a thunderous shot from Joe Meakin crashed against the underside of the crossbar and away, and there were other good chances too.

At the other end, the defence and Ryan Smith were determined to keep a clean sheet again this season, and that’s exactly what happened.

Felix Hoog again seemed to be involved in almost everything, and Jason Moon was solid in defence throughout. Mason White and Lewis Wilson – the full backs also had very good games. Apologies to anyone who hasn’t been mentioned as it was a great all round performance by everyone.

With just 4 league games remaining, though none of them easy by any means, the result does mean the Colts are back in the driving seat to determine where the Championship ends up.

Full Time - Calverton 4 v Wollaton Hall 0

Scorers – Luke West (2), Macca Hayes, Costas Charalambous.

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 27 March 08 - Gedling 1 v Calverton 0

The Colts spurned their chance to go clear at the top of Division 1 in last night’s game playing for the first time under lights. A pretty scrappy affair for the most part with only occasional flashes of the football the lads can play, but even so, they had the lion’s share of possession, and should have got something from the game.

Ryan Smith didn’t have a save to make throughout the whole match in the Colts goal, and unfortunately appeared to slip as Gedling scored their second half winner.

Few chances and clear cut openings for either side in the first half with Sam White in the Gedling goal making a couple of excellent stops from efforts by the Colts.

The half-time score of 0-0 was about fair, even though most of the match was played in Gedling’s half as they seemed content to try and hit Calverton on the break.

Half Time - Gedling 0 v Calverton 0

In the second half, the Colts tried unsuccessfully to turn their territorial advantage into goals, and again the Gedling keeper kept his side in the match with a quality save from a Macca Hayes long range effort.

The Gedling goal came from a controversial ‘soft’ free kick outside the Colts area, and as they failed to clear the ball, and Ryan Smith appeared to slip, somehow the ball literally trickled over the line. This did seem to spur Calverton into action, and with time running out, they had some great efforts but just couldn’t find the net. They will not come this close without scoring again. Shots went just wide, and Lewis Dobbins saw his headed effort hit the crossbar, bounce down into the area and somehow be scrambled away.

In some respects, the result could be put down to ‘just one of those matches’ when the lads tried a little too hard, when their first touch wasn’t the best, and Gedling played well against their higher placed opposition.

The result once again opens up the league competition, and the coming month will be all important in deciding where the trophy ends up.

Full Time - Gedling 1 v Calverton 0

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 16 March 08 - Calverton 2 v Hucknall Sports 1

This match was played at Hucknall due to the Calverton pitch being waterlogged, and in an extremely strong cross-wind that made decent football difficult to say the least, but thankfully the Colts came away with another 3 points, and despite riding their luck at times, were the better side and deserved the win.

The Colts took the game to Hucknall in the first 10 minutes and went close on a number of occasions. And a Hucknall break saw Ryan Smith in the Colts goal pull off the save of the season as he somehow got his fingertips to a shot destined for the top corner. But, just a few minutes later, the Colts went behind following Costas Charalambous deflecting his clearance into the goal as he tried to clear a shot that was going wide. If the lads were to get anything from the game, they were going to have to come from behind for the fifth time this season. But that’s precisely what they set about doing.

The Colts started to turn the screw on Hucknall forcing them back into their own half more and more, but were still very dangerous on the break.

And then something happened that the rest of the lads have been waiting for since early in the season – a Macca Hayes goal – as Macca finally found his scoring touch as he fired home as the Hucknall defence backed away. It was a deserved equaliser, but it meant that the lads had only just over one half of the game to forge out a win.

Half Time - Calverton 1 v Hucknall Sports 1

Felix Hogg was trying to play all over the pitch and pressurise Hucknall, and some other good performances in quite atrocious conditions gave cause for hope, and as Hucknall tired, Calverton looked slightly more likely to score. It was following a corner, that the ball fell to Matt Platt, and he drilled his shot home to give the advantage back to Calverton.

Even so, Hucknall were dangerous on the break, and Mason White had to leave the field of play with a suspected broken toe. Hucknall’s Joe Wells almost broke free of the Calverton defence, but a strong saving tackle by Lewis Wilson near the end denied him a shooting opportunity.

A couple of players had a poor showing this week, and they will know who they are before the next match – if they don’t know already!

Today’s result was a hard fought affair, with the 3 points being the most important thing at this stage, but overall, the lads must improve a bit if they really want this title.

Full Time - Calverton 2 v Hucknall Sports 1

Scorers – Macca Hayes, Matt Platt

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 9 March 08 - Parkdale 0 v Calverton 1

The saga of the Saab! I can only thank everyone today, and that includes Parkdale, as my car – or rather talkSPORT’s car, was dead when I went out to it today to go to the match. Only through a number of people running around were we able to get everyone to the match and play the game, albeit we kicked off late.

So – to the game – and what a great performance! Only really going to be one team who were going to win, and the lads certainly deserved the 3 points.

The first half was a well fought match, with Calverton maintaining the upper hand carving out a few chances, and Ryan Smith in the Calverton goal only touching the ball twice in open play. The Colts were bossing Parkdale about! But in such a tight encounter, the first goal would always prove crucial, and for most of the match a 0-0 scoreline looked favourite.

Half Time - Parkdale 0 v Calverton 0

It is almost impossible to pick a man of the match as there were some outstanding performances, but the goal and breakthrough came midway through the second half when Greg Tempest played Lewis Dobbins in to slot home the opener and the eventual winner. The lads could not be faulted today for commitment, and Luke West was brought down with a poor tackle as Parkdale struggled to contain him. Greg Tempest also took a knock in the face, but the lads were not to be held today, and ran out winners deservedly. Backs to the wall stuff for the last few minutes, but Ryan Smith didn’t have many difficult saves to make at all as the Parkdale attack was snuffed out.

Individuals

Ryan Smith – another exemplary performance without putting a foot wrong and commanded his area better than any other keeper in the league – hands off Derby!

Lewis Wilson – played as if his life depended on it – and made a fantastic clearance at the far post from a cross with an attacker closing in as Parkdale tried everything to force an equaliser.

Greg Tempest – another polished display from Greg as he prevented any meaningful attack down his flank – and set up the goal for Dobbo.

Costas Charalambous – knows no fear! Tackles hard and never gives up. Good in the air and with pace to get himself out of trouble – if only he’d look up every now and again!

Felix Hogg – outstanding performance from Oggie – nothing troubled him today and dealt with anything and everything, including the physicals!

Lewis Dobbins – scored the winner – about time he was back on the scoresheet! Put himself about up front with Westy and a constant thorn in Parkdale’s side.

Macca Hayes – strong performance from Macca – still to open his account – next week would be nice! Blasted one effort over the bar, though it did bobble – just a bit!

Joe Meakin – tackled and battled hard throughout, put in some lovely crosses, and took up some great positions – if only Newcastle were putting in this level of effort, they would be winning again!

Jason Moon – an outstanding display in central midfield, despite being ill. Courageous to the end – battled, tackled and spread the play superbly, and with a smashing attitude – complemented by the match official.

Chris Heathcote – a smashing pocket dynamo, also knows no fear and gets involved to make a real nuisance of himself.

Luke West – ran himself into the ground and didn’t give the Parkdale defence a second of peace. Another courageous performance and with a little more luck would have scored himself.

Mason Bramwell – acquitted himself well in central midfield when he came on, and played some nice little passes when he finally got around to it!

9 straight wins in all competitions – we’ll see if the lads can make it double figures next week, but I’m sure Hucknall will have something to say about that!

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 2 March 08 - Calverton 2 v Netherfield 1

It is difficult to believe the lowly position Netherfield find themselves in following their spirited performance in today’s game. It is the hardest game the Colts have had all season. Undoubtedly the Colts had the better possession, but Netherfield always looked dangerous on the break as they flooded forward.

The Colts also had a few injury and illness worries before kick-off, so the team were not at full strength today. One of the casualties, Luke ‘Westy’ West dragged himself (if you believe him) from his death bed to play. He opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a second bite of the cherry goal after his first shot had bounced straight back to him. And that was how it stayed until half time. Ryan Smith in the Colts goal had been called upon to make a few good saves, and his handling was top drawer, as was his one on one play – and brave too in one save at the feet of a striker.

Half Time - Calverton 1 v Netherfield 0

Netherfield were out of the blocks very quickly in the second half, and caught the Colts cold. Ryan Smith made a good save as he came off his line, but the ball fell to a Netherfield player who was able to guide the ball home for an equaliser.

Wes ‘Sicknote’ Anderson had the chance to put the Colts back in front, but fired his shot straight at the keeper who somehow got the ball out for a corner. Then Felix ‘Oggie’ Hogg saw his header go just past the post from a corner. Lewis ‘Dobbo’ Dobbins fired just over the crossbar, and into the side netting, and it looked like the Colts were about to drop their first points of 2008.

Then Macca Hayes went on a defence splitting run, and as the keeper fumbled his shot, Macca was pushed over in the goalmouth scramble, and the referee rightly awarded the penalty. With just 5 minutes remaining on the clock, up stepped Westy again to fire home the winner.

A hard fought close game that pushed the Colts to draw on new depths of teamwork. A result ground out from a good without being outstanding performance.

The result puts the lads back joint at the top of the league for the first time since September 2007.

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 24 Feb 08 - Attenborough 0 v Calverton 4

Attenborough are a strong, physical, well organised side who do not really deserve to be where they are in this league, and they made things hard for the lads today for parts of the game. Having said that, the one aspect of their game that is predictable, is that their only attacks came from a long ball straight down the middle from the keeper – Route 1. So if you can handle that, and score, you should come away with the points – football’s a simple game when you think about it.

Today, Calverton dealt quite easily with any Attenborough goalie launches, and then played the more attractive football to carve out the win.

The opening goal was reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s first against Newcastle (sorry Joe) the day before, as Joe Meakin first over a hard hit cross that was volleyed home (with his carpet slipper right) by Greg Tempest. Greg has since assured me that he really meant to score the goal! But seriously – it was a very well taken goal. That came after just 5 minutes, and for the remainder of the first half, the lads were just over-hitting their passes and through balls, and the following wind was taking the ball away from the attackers.

Half Time Attenborough 0 v Calverton 1

The slender half time lead was extended by Westy 10 minutes into the second half, and he scored his second and Calverton’s third following a terrible mix up in the Attenborough area between the keeper (who played well) and a defender, that allowed him to sidefoot home.

The final goal came from Joss Hillary following him battling through and despite a desperate tackle, he maintained his footing, to add the fourth.

Another strong all round performance from the lads with a full 16 squad out for the first time this season!

Some excellent individual performances today, and another clean sheet was nice to see at the ‘opposite’ end too. The Colts continued playing the better football throughout, and deserved their win, but Attenborough are a decent side.

Well done – AGAIN. 7 straight wins!

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 – 10 Feb 08 - Calverton 6 v Priory Celtic 2

The third time this season that these two teams have met, and Calverton again inflicted a heavy defeat on their visitors. However, it wasn’t before the Colts had gone behind to an early goal. This would be the fourth time this season that the lads would have to come from behind if they were to gain a win.

With just a couple of minutes on the clock, Mason White was adjudged to have brought down a Priory player inside the box, and the penalty was despatched to give the visitors an early lead.

But from then on, it was a little like watching King Canute try and stop the tide coming in, as Calverton mounted attack after attack. They were level 10 minutes after going behind as Joe Meakin latched on to a through ball, and struck his shot firmly and on target to beat the Priory keeper.

Calverton might have missed captain Lewis Dobbins ‘Dobbo’ out injured, but the lads just got on with the game, and took the play to Priory. Wes Anderson and Luke West notched up another two goals before half-time to make the score 3-1 at the half way mark.

Half Time - Calverton 3 v Priory Celtic 1

Priory started the second half meaningfully, and scored a nice second goal lobbing Ryan Smith in the Calverton goal – nothing he could do about that one.

But then the stranglehold the Colts had on the game came through as they netted 3 second half goals – all of them well taken goals. Mason White made up for his first half penalty scoring twice – one a rifle shot into the corner, the other a deft lob.

But the goal of the game came from Chris Heathcote, as his long range strike nestled into the top corner to round off an accomplished showing from the lads. The win keeps them in touch with the top and the next month is an important time for the lads with some crucial games.

Match Report – U14s – YEL Division 1 - 27 Jan 08 - Calverton 3 v East Valley 2

This rearranged fixture came about due to other teams being involved in Cup games this week, and it pitched Calverton against the team above them in second place in the league – East Valley. Calverton had already knocked East Valley out of the YEL Cup by the odd goal, so today’s match was always going to be a close fought, tight game. And so it turned out.

Calverton had a few selection problems before kick-off as Lewis Wilson nurses his broken toe for a little longer, and then a mystery bug affected at least two of the lads who played today, so a huge thanks and well done to them. Jason Moon in particular didn’t put a foot wrong, despite being below par.

Mason White picked up a knock early in the game and soldiered on until half time, and came off early after the restart. Lewis Dobbins arrived nursing a slight back injury, though his contribution today was much appreciated.

The opening exchanges showed that Calverton were playing the better football with their fluent passing game, with East Valley content to try and hit on the break, so Calverton tried to force home their advantage, and were making East Valley concede a series of corners.

It was following one of those corners on 15 minutes, that the Colts took the lead through Joe Meakin as his shot / cross found its way in at the far post. This slice of good fortune was nothing more than the lads deserved against a battling East Valley side.

The score remained the same until about 5 minutes before half time, when East Valley equalised with a mishit shot that dropped over Ryan Smith in the Colts goal. Up to that point, Ryan hadn’t had a shot to save!

Half Time - Calverton 1 v East Valley 1

East Valley started to come into the game a little more at the beginning of the second half, though Calverton still controlled the central midfield area, and that was to prove telling. However, East Valley took the lead after 15 minutes of the second half with a nice goal. For once the Calverton back line was breached.

Once again, this season, if the lads wanted something from this game, they would have to come from behind.

The Colts started to turn the screw on East Valley, who were forced into making some last ditch tackles, including one from a central defender which should have probably made him see a red card, being a two footed lunge! As it was, he was lucky to escape with a yellow card.

With just 10 minutes remaining, Matt Platt nipped between a defender and the East Valley to grab an equaliser from a position East Valley should have dealt with. If there was going to be a winner today, Calverton were now in the ascendancy – but not before Ryan Smith was forced into a great save from a one on one situation.

Captain Lewis Dobbins was then brought back on, with Mason White up front, and within 5 minutes, Mason made an overhead pass into the path of ‘Dobbo’ who calmly placed his shot over the oncoming East Valley keeper. With only 2 minutes remaining, East Valley didn’t really have time to react, and possibly the best chance of the game then fell to Macca Hayes who brought down a cross, slipped it past a defender and then blasted his shot over the bar.

The Colts fully deserved their win against their higher placed opponents and this result was Calverton’s second win over East Valley this season, with the result bringing the Colts level in second place in the league.

Five straight wins in all competitions puts the lads in a strong position for the remainder of the season.

Match Report – U14s – YEL Cup Quarter-Final - 20 Jan 08 - Calverton 5 v Priory Celtic 1

Another outstanding performance from the Colts to progress to the YEL Cup Semi-Final as they ran out 5-1 winners against Priory Celtic. It would be fair to say that a double figures win would not have been out of place today, as the lads played extremely well, dominating the match throughout.

They won everything in the air – well almost – and tackled superbly when not in possession. It is a pleasure to watch them when they are in this mood.

Straight from the kick-off, the writing was on the wall for Priory, as the Colts almost took the lead within the first 30 seconds. And the pressure was then incessant and it was only a matter of time before the lads sprang the offside trap. With a linesman faster on the draw than Billy The Kid, the Colts struggled to break through for a few minutes, until Greg Tempest slotted home the first of the day following the referee rightly over-ruling the linesman.

The second came from a great solo run by ‘Westy’, and despite the valiant attempts of the Priory keeper, he was unable to prevent the lads from taking a 2-0 lead.

Captain ‘Dobbo’ was pulling the defence different ways with Westy, and it was his first goal for 3 matches as he hammered the third into the roof of the net after a surging run.

That was how it stayed until half time, but there were close efforts from Macca Hayes, Dobbo also hit the post, and saw a shot drift just wide, Greg Tempest could also have added another – in fact another 4 or 5 goals might have reflected the lads domination.

Half Time - Calverton 3 v Priory Celtic 0

Second half, and a few changes, but it didn’t detract from the way the lads were playing, pressing for more goals. The fourth came from ‘Oggie’ as he headed home from close range at a corner, and it was all he deserved from his display today.

sily have had more goals with Mason Bramwell almost getting on the scoresheet, along with Joe Meakin and Chris Heathcote. Lewis Wilson almost got through on goal but just couldn’t quite get the ball out from under his feet, instead setting up another chance.

A goal-mouth scramble somehow saw Priory keep the ball out of their goal with a number of goal-line clearances, with other goal-line blocks coming from other chances too.

The final goal came from Wes Anderson following a nice move from the lads to round off a great overall performance.

The defence marshalled Priory very well again today with Jason Moon and Costas Charalambous playing well again, and the return of Mason White to the squad following a long injury lay-off couldn’t have come at a better time to boost the squad.

Ryan Smith had safe hands again, and was a little unlucky with the Priory goal as a headed effort looped over him and just under the bar.

The Colts simply over-powered Priory today, and they have to do it all again next week in the League fixture! Well done lads.

Match Report – U14s – 6 Jan 08 - Calverton 2 v Gedling 0

After the long lay-off that stretched to well before Christmas, you might have expected the lads to be a bit rusty, especially against Gedling, who have been something of a bogey side to the Colts in recent years. So a win against Gedling was nice today, and the manner of the win was particularly satisfying.

The Colts completely dominated this match from start to finish, with Gedling being limited to a single shot in each half, and only one of those was on target causing Ryan Smith to make one save throughout the whole game.

Played in superb spirit throughout by both sides, the Colts won second ball possession continually, and were always a threat going forward.

The first goal, when it came was a tap in for Luke ‘Westy’ West, following a firmly struck shot from Lewis ‘Dobbo’ Dobbins, that the Gedling keeper failed to hold, and that was how it remained at half time, with a cracking shot from Joe Meakin being well saved by the Gedling keeper, who was their man of the match.

Half Time - Calverton 1 v Gedling 0

A slight adjustment to the shape of the Calverton side to start the second half merely served to push home the domination, and Gedling were very limited in their attacks, or getting out of their own half.

But for all that, the Gedling centre-backs played very well, especially in the second half, so despite the possession, Calverton couldn’t find a second goal.

Felix Hogg smashed home a shot to extend the Colts lead, and during the match, the Colts also hit the crossbar, the post, and had a goal disallowed for offside, so additional goals could easily have come their way.

As it is, the win maintains the Colts push up the table hot on the leaders heels, so some very important games to come will make the season hopefully.

Overall, this was as good as the Colts have played this season as they were simply too strong for Gedling on the day.

Full Time - Calverton 2 v Gedling 0

Scorers – Luke West, Felix Hogg.

Match Report Under 14s – YEL Cup - 25 November 2007 - Calverton 1 v East Valley 0

This rearranged match from last weekend was held over due to a waterlogged pitch. With both sides placed in 2 nd and 3 rd in the league, it was always going to be a close encounter, and the match was very tight for much of the game.

To be fair, the Colts were playing some lovely passing football, and were creating the much better chances, without adding goals to their superiority on the pitch. The East Valley keeper made a string of excellent saves throughout the game to keep the visitors in it.

Ryan Smith in the Colts goal was called upon a couple of times with fine saves, but chances were hard to come by.

With the half time score still at 0-0, it was clear that the first goal was to prove crucial, and it went to the Colts with about 8 minutes remaining.

The ball was crossed from the right wing by Mason Bramwell who pulled the ball back well, and it found its way to Greg Tempest who hammered his shot into the goal.

A little controversy towards the end when East Valley had a goal disallowed for a relatively minor infringement, but the Colts deserved the win on today’s performance. They now progress to the Quarter final of the YEL Cup.

Next week, they have it all to do again as they travel to East Valley to play them away in the league.

Match Report Under 14s – 4 November 2007 - Hucknall 3 v Calverton 4

Despite the very best efforts from the Colts at this close encounter with Hucknall, they still managed to come away with the points!

The lads went behind early on to a very unfortunate slip by Ryan Smith in goal for the Colts in an uncharacteristic piece of misfortune, but he then made some very good saves to keep the game alive.

The lads were losing 3-1 at half time, but it was clearly one of those games that still had a lot of play left. Goals from Joe Meakin, Matt Platt and a couple from Lewis Dobbins made sure of the points for the Colts and a return to winning ways. An excellent turn around from a losing position.

Match Report Under 14s – 14 October 2007 - Netherfield 3 v Calverton 1

Playing catch up with the match reports, but suffice to say that this result did not reflect the territorial advantage that the Colts displayed throughout – unfortunately, the Colts failed to make their advantage count in both possession and territory, and Netherfield scored with 3 breakaway attacks, pretty much against the run of play. Put it down to one of those games where sometimes it just happens that way.

Ryan Smith scored for the Colts, but the points went to the home side.

Match Report U14s YEL 7 October 2007 - Calverton 1 v Parkdale 4

‘First defeat of defeat, but Colts stay top’

On paper this was always going to be a very difficult match for the Colts, as Parkdale have always had a strong side, and so it proved today, as the visitors enjoyed a very flattering final scoreline.

For much of the first half, Parkdale put Calverton under a lot of pressure, but without creating a clear-cut chance, and Ryan Smith in the Colts goal was not forced to make a save during the first half. Calverton’s defence and midfield worked hard to restrict the visitors. Wes Anderson did an excellent job in the first half tracking back and helping out down his flank. Calverton were content to try and catch Parkdale on the break, and went close with long range efforts, but without doubt, Parkdale had the better of the play in the first half.

Half time - Calverton 0 v Parkdale 0

Much of the same was expected in the second half, though the Colts started to get a foothold in the game, something they had been chasing for much of the first half.

The turning point of the game came with the score still at 0-0, when two highly questionable decisions were given by the Parkdale linesman, that denied the Colts their best two scoring opportunities of the game. His Sunday mornings would clearly be better spent watching ‘Heaven and Earth’ with Gloria Hunniford! The referee, on the other hand, had a very good game. It’s a pity that the game was almost spoiled by these things!

Costas Charalambous had a strong game in central defence, and had the Parkdale defence in his pocket when it came to pace, but Parkdale took the lead following an injury to the Calverton keeper Ryan Smith, who was whisked off to A&E after the game to check on a hand injury that meant he spent most of the second unable to use it.

Parkdale took full advantage of this misfortune and quickly scored 3 more goals, and only then did Calverton produce their best of the game. Their pressure forced a corner, and following the corner, the referee spotted an infringement in the area and awarded Calverton a soft penalty that was put away by Curt Worthington. Shortly after that, Lewis Dobbins broke free from the defence and had a terrific shot pushed onto the crossbar, and somehow Parkdale scrambled the ball away. So overall, despite the ‘lino’s’ decisions, Parkdale deserved their win, though by a closer scoreline than in the end, and how different it might have been had the Colts been allowed to take their chances when the score was still 0-0.

The result still leaves Calverton top of the table, and their destiny lies in their own hands.

Individuals –

Ryan Smith – an extremely brave display through to the end – we’ll await the outcome of the medical report before making a full assessment.

Jason Moon – slotted into defence very easily, and played very well throughout. Prevented the Parkdale attack getting down the flank and provided good cover for Costas.

Costas Charalambous – probably his best performance of the season with a ‘no nonsense’ defensive showing, only had to be reminded once!

Lewis Wilson – despite getting caught out of position a couple of times, still restricted the lively Parkdale attack. Made some telling interceptions, and distribution was also sound.

Wes Anderson – a very strong first half showing, though passing went astray in second half. Still just to find his best form.

Curt Worthington – scored the Colts goal, and battled in midfield without really getting the stranglehold throughout the game.

Joe Meakin – a step off the pace today, and still to reproduce his best form, but mopped up well in midfield most of the time.

Matt Platt – still needs to get his head up quicker and use the players around him quicker, but did well for the most part against strong opposition.

Macauley Hayes – making his debut for the Colts showed why his signing will be an important one, and showed hints of his capabilities that will no doubt be useful in the coming weeks.

Mason Bramwell – struggled with a hip niggle for much of the second half, but starting to link a little better with ‘Dobbo’.

Lewis Dobbins – proved himself a handful for Parkdale up front, and had one great shot saved by the Parkdale keeper onto the bar. Took a heavy knock in the first half and only really started getting at the defence in the last 20 minutes.

Final score - Calverton 1 v Parkdale 4

Scorer – Curt Worthington

Match Report U14s YEL 30 September 2007 - Calverton 1 v Attenborough 0

‘Colts Made To Work Hard for the Points’

This game really had the makings of an almighty banana skin, as Calverton have become the team to beat, and today’s visitors gave a thoroughly good account of themselves.

The Man of the Match was easily the Attenborough keeper as he made some very good stops including one save from a Joe Meakin free kick by pushing the ball onto the crossbar and the chance then was cleared.

Greg Tempest on the other hand in the Colts goal didn’t have a save to make all the game, but despite their territorial advantage, the Colts seemed unable to force home the advantage.

The Colts had to work hard for their victory, but in the first half, they were unable to break down the Attenborough defence on a regular basis, with any shots being mopped up by the keeper. Lewis Dobbins broke through on a couple of occasions, only to see his shot blocked. ‘Dobbo’ received little protection from the officials and received a buffeting throughout the game, being pushed and climbed on throughout. Off the ball obstructions went unpunished, for both sides, but Calverton were attacking most so seemed to suffer more.

By the end of the first half, the Colts were just starting to get a little frustrated by not being in the lead, but the half-time talk concentrated on keeping their heads, playing football and the goal would come.

Half time - Calverton 0 v Attenborough 0

The second half carried on as the first had ended, with Calverton almost breaking the deadlock within seconds. The Attenborough keeper was again kept busy as Calverton started to turn the screw.

When the goal came, despite all the excellent approach play from the Colts, it was a defensive mistake pounced on by Mason Bramwell that gave the Colts the lead. Mason placed his shot past the oncoming keeper and just inside the post to ease the pressure that was building through being unable to crack open Attenborough.

Despite pushing hard for another goal, the lads couldn’t find another, with Joe Meakin’s free kick going closest.

In the final analysis, Man Utd seem to be making a habit of 1-0 wins, so we’ll take that and the 3 points for now.

Final score - Calverton 1 v Attenborough 0

Scorer – Mason Bramwell

Match Report U14s YEL 23 September 2007 - Toton 2 v Calverton 4

With 2 of the first 3 games of the season against last year’s Champions and Runners-Up, the new season was always going to be a tough proposition for the first month, so it gives me enormous pleasure to say that with 3 matches gone, the lads have a 100% record, having won all 3.

Today’s game against last season’s champions at the infamous ‘ski-slope’, was the classic game of two halves. Having said that, in previous years, the lads heads would have gone down, and they might have started to bicker amongst themselves and argue and blame. It is therefore incredibly pleasing to see that the Colts listened at half-time, just when the match could have gone either way, and they took the game by the scruff of the neck and recovered from a 2-0 half time deficit.

Kicking up the slope in the first half, they were always going to be up against a Toton onslaught, even without one or two of last year’s squad, and so it proved. Although the Colts played the better football for much of the first half, it was Toton who took the lead following the awarding of a free kick just outside the penalty area, that was nicely chipped in off the underside of the crossbar. It was a little against the run of play, as the Colts had been dominating for much of the half.

With just a few minutes remaining in the first half, Toton doubled their lead from close range, with Colts keeper Ryan Smith (‘From Wales’) unable to keep the shot out, despite getting a strong hand on the shot.

Half time - Toton 2 v Calverton 0

As the Colts turned round at half time, a stern talking to made sure they focussed on the job in hand – to get an early second half goal. They mounted the pressure, and a crisp shot on the turn from Lewis Dobbins (‘Dobbo’) pulled one back for the Colts.

With Toton doubling up on Dobbo for much of the time, gaps started to emerge in the Toton defence. And just 5 minutes later, Dobbo hit another low shot that forced a great stop from the keeper, but all he could do was push it into the path of Mason Bramwell (‘Sniffer’). This pulled the scores back level, and still 20 minutes left.

The Colts maintained their shape well during the second half concentrating on the job to do, and Dobbo and Curt Worthington went close with efforts just over the bar.

With 15 minutes left, Curt Worthington (‘Rudeboy’), forced his way into the Toton area, and fired a low hard shot into the goal to give Calverton the lead for the first time.

Toton fought hard to get back on terms although Ryan Smith didn’t have a shot to save in the second half as the defence worked well together. Jason ‘Bubblewrap’ Moon marshalled the area just in front of the back four to perfection, and again took his obligatory knock on a shin.

With 5 minutes left, the win was sealed as Curt Worthington fired in another goal to make the final score 4-2. I believe this is the first league match Toton have played and lost for over a year, so well done to them for such a superb record, and well done to the Colts for the performance today.

Final score - Toton 2 v Calverton 4

Scorers – Curt Worthington (2), Lewis Dobbins, Mason Bramwell

Individuals

Ryan Smith – had little to do for much of the game, and couldn’t really have done much about either goal. Ryan gets to play out next week!

Defence

Lewis Wilson – a sound performance still learning his craft, but another solid defensive display.

Costas Charalambous – strong in the air, and fast with it. Able to make good recoveries, and often has to! Always gives 100%.

Mason White – a revelation so far this season, his pace has been very valuable on a number of occasions.

Midfield

Matt Platt – went close with a good header today that forced a good save from the Toton keeper, and working hard on the right flank. Just needs to get quicker feet, and head up sooner, and will make incredible improvement just by doing that.

Joe Meakin – covers just about every blade of grass – well until he gets knackered anyway! Controlled midfield today along with his team-mates and played some lovely incisive passes.

Curt Worthington – scored another two goals and works so hard in midfield. Tackles well and harasses opposition into mistakes.

Jason Moon – has taken to the holding midfield role extremely well, reads the game well, though has to receive medical treatment at least once a game – I think it’s paragraph c of his contract that stipulates that he must receive the treatment every game. Also keeping Boots in business in bandage sales!

Greg Tempest – an assured skilful performance on the left flank and showed deft touches, shots and crosses. Also reads the game very well and helped out at the back on a number of occasions today when it was most needed.

Attack

Lewis Dobbins – another strong performance, and despite being double marked for much of the game, still scored one and set another up. Strong as an ox, and quick with it. Also becoming a provider for others. A danger to any defence.

Mason Bramwell – got off the mark this season with a typical poacher’s goal today, and I’m pleased for him. Needs to work a bit harder for the cause at times, but working defences more often now.

Subs

Wes Anderson – injected some pace when he came on, and could have scored. Linked well with forwards too. A good sound outing.

Joss Hillary – came on for a few minutes, but showed in that time that he can turn a game.

inally, well done again to everyone – another great result and excellent start to the season.

Match Report U14s YEL 16 September 2007 - Priory Celtic 0 v Calverton 4

An outstanding team performance this week against a strong Priory Celtic side. With a couple of players unavailable, and playing into a strong wind in the first half, the Colts defended superbly and protected their goal well. Greg Tempest in goal was called on to make just one outstanding save from a direct free kick that was destined for the top corner, but he somehow clawed it away for a corner.

Other than that, Costas Charalambous won everything in the air, and Mason White again marshalled the lads in front of him. Lewis Wilson was also strong and mean in the tackle. The defence as a unit protected Greg’s goal well, and restricted Priory to long range efforts.

Jason Moon played in the holding role just in front of the defence, and nursed his way through the game playing superbly, breaking up the Priory attacks and with very good distribution. He was also called on with an excellent defensive header late on in the second half. An all round accomplished performance today.

Joe Meakin worked extremely hard alongside Curt Worthington in midfield, and the two of them ran central midfield throughout the game. Matt Platt out wide with Mason Bramwell on the other wing also continually put pressure on Priory throughout.

Lewis Dobbins worked like a Trojan today up front, and although he failed to get on the scoresheet, he came very close with a few efforts including one long range effort in the second half that dropped just over the bar with the goalkeeper off his line in no-man’s land. He unselfishly set up a goal to seal an all round outstanding captain’s performance.

So to the game!

The first half was backs to the wall stuff to a degree as the wind made clearing the lines a little difficult, and it was left to an outstanding solo run and finish from Curt Worthington to give the Colts the lead after about 10 minutes. That was the only goal of the first half, and as occasionally happens in football, it would be the Colts turn to be dominant in the second period.

Half time - Priory Celtic 0 v Calverton 1

Following the break, with the wind at their backs, there was a little respite for the defence for much of the second half, though they tired a little towards the end, and a midfield sometimes left the defence a little exposed.

The next goal was always going to be important, and after ‘Dobbo’ set him up, Joe Meakin hit a lovely shot into the top corner with his left. This goal effectively killed off the challenge from Priory, and Curt Worthington soon added a third goal for the Colts with another tremendous solo run.

Towards the end, Lewis Wilson linked well with Costas Charalambous as he went on a mazy run down the right wing before laying the ball back for Matt Platt to sink his shot into the bottom corner.

After that, the Colts just did enough to ensure they kept control of the outcome, and to complete the victory.

The two most pleasing aspects of this performance were the ‘team’ nature of the win as everyone worked hard for the team. And finally, you don’t know how much pleasure it gives me to be able to say that the lads kept a clean sheet. The first for over a year! An unbelievable year last season saw the lads finish fourth, but concede in every game!

This win takes them to the top of Division 1 and though it is very early in the season, we’ll take that at this point.

This football lark can be fun, fun, fun when you win, win, win!!!

Final score - Priory Celtic 0 v Calverton 4

Scorers – Curt Worthington (2), Joe Meakin, Matt Platt

Match Report U14s YEL 9 September 2007 Calverton 2 v Wollaton Sports 1

A tough opener for the Colts against last season’s runners-up, and champions in the 4 seasons before that. Calverton did knock Wollaton out of the YEL Cup last season, but this was always going to be a very tough match.

There was very little to choose between the teams for the first 10 minutes as both midfields battled to gain the upper hand without one team really controlling the other. Neither side had created a clear opening, but a Wollaton attack suddenly burst through and as Costas Charalambous tried to get on terms, legs tangled and both players went down in a heap, with a penalty being the decision. That was calmly despatched to give Wollaton en early lead.

The Colts might have buckled in previous seasons, but as they mature they have developed some steel, and they battled hard to forge an equaliser. 5 minutes before the break, Calverton striker and captain Lewis ‘Dobbo’ Dobbins cut in from the right and hit a hard left foot shot into the bottom corner to haul the Colts level. Just before half time, a Wollaton player received a straight red card apparently for swearing at the referee, and as the Colts went in level at half time, the pendulum was beginning to swing back their way.

Half time - Calverton 1 v Wollaton 1

The sending off changed the game considerably, and Calverton tried hard to take advantage of playing against 10 men – but Wollaton were giving a very strong account even though they were a man light.

Wes ‘Sicknote’ Collins hit a tremendous long range shot that crashed against the crossbar and away, and a draw looked the most likely outcome.

Jason ‘Bubblewrap’ Moon took a knock and had to be substituted, and with just a couple of minutes left, that man Dobbo struck again as he managed to get his shot away despite strong pressure from the Wollaton defence. The ball settled in the bottom corner to give the Colts the winner.

Overall a strong opening performance against a strong Wollaton team who will come again after this setback.

Final score - Calverton 2 v Wollaton 1

Scorer – Lewis Dobbins (2)
