Tournament 2006

COLTS TOURNAMENT 2006 IS ANOTHER SUCCESS

Due to the World cup this years' tournament was brought forward to commence prior to the big kick-off. The timing was still a bit of a gamble as it co-incided with the second week-end of the spring bank holiday and school half term break but there was another huge turn-out with 164 teams entering.

This year a few key people were missing due to holidays and this gave the opportunity for a few new people to get involved.

In the true Calverton Tournament tradition the weather was superb with glorious sunshine on all but the last late afternoon.

A couple of mentions need to be made regarding Pete Bowman's Under 12 team who stepped up to fill a vacancy in the Under 13 age group and for Micky Bradwell's Under 10 who filled in for a drop-out in a very strong Under 11 group. Big thanks to both teams who gave an excellent account.

This Year's Age Group Winners Were:
Under 7 - Toton
Under 8 - Pegasus Broncos
Under 9 - Netherfield Boys
Under 10 - Vernon Colts
Under 11 - Vernon Colts
Under 12 -
Toton
Under 13 Boys - Grantham Town
Under 13 Girls - Clifton All Whites
Under 14 - Bulwell Rangers

The Committee would like to thank all those who volunteered their time so generously, many of which are not connected with the club directly, and a big thank you to all the sponsors of the Calverton Tournament, The Calverton Echo, Calverton Horticultural Show, Mapperley Sports, ABS, Frank Key, Denmans Electrical Wholesalers, Daleside Shopfitters and Focus Label Machinery Ltd , without their support community events like this would not take place.

Finally, I asked Pete if he could say a word or two about the refs and whether or not there was any funny incedents. This was his response...

"Yes John,

The really young refs were Mitchell Duffin, Chris Down, Jordan and Craig Todd (he stepped in to do a couple of games to relieve a ref)

The other two were older but still off the level 7 course, Dan Locker and Tony Collins. All of these with the exception of Craig Todd reffed for the whole of the weekend.

There were three League refs, Malc Cassidy, Ian Smith and Brian Hambidge – Brian reffed all day Saturday, Ian all day Sunday but Malc was outstanding, he was there the whole time!

Then there were the vets helpers, Gary Clarke, Chris Melvin, Andy Troke, Baz Hodgson and of course Tommy with the scorers.

Added to this were Sam Hodgson, Chris Edson, Glen Fisher, Tony Mullen, Mark Curwood, Leon Murdy and Jiggy, once again with the scorers.

Finally (I think) we had Phil Richardson, Pete Bowman, Stu (he was suggested to us by Jane Melaugh, a big lad who ate two burgers at once!) and the always reliable Daz Smith. I have to say as well that Choc came up trumps (once I found him!) he helped ref.

On stand by Dave Lee and Dean Wilson offered their services which was very rewarding to know.

To be honest there were no incidents that stand out as funny but overall we all laughed a lot at just silly banter between the lads in between the matches.

I can’t say enough about the refs because as you know it was very difficult in the heat and they were on the go a long time. I think they were all brilliant.

Cheers

Pete

UNDER 11 TOURNAMENT REPORT

The Calverton Tournament now attracts most of the Top teams in the county and to get through the Group stages and into the knockout stage is an achievement in itself. On paper the Blue squad were drawn in the hardest of groups with 3 of the tournament favourites Mansfield, Carlton & West Bridgford. The Red squad looked to be in a more comfortable group with only Netherfield looking a threat. In the end both Teams put in stunning performances to end top of each of their respective Group sections, a fantastic effort.

On to the Knockout stage and the Blue team met Toton who went into an early lead which we never recovered from, in the end loosing  3-0. The Red team had a tough task against Mansfield White in the end scoring a dramatic last minute goal to win 3-2. In the Semi final The Red team met Toton, this time however Calverton did not allow them the space up front and dominated the game , but the Toton keeper was unbeatable even after extra time.

Down to the Penalty shoot out and the boys took their chances , whilst Mathew pulled off the saves to take us to the Final against Vernon. After the emotions of the semi-final the tiredness crept in and the boys were not looking a sharp as they had earlier. Calverton went into an early lead but in the end the quality and movement of a fresher Vernon team made the difference and they went into a 2-1 lead at half time.

Calverton worked hard and created the chances but couldn't put the ball away. Vernon sealed the game in the last few minutes to make it 3-1 and to be fair were probably the best team in the Tournament on the day.I am sure that everyone was proud of both teams today, and certainly the Blue team contributed in making passage for the Red team easier by knocking out other favourites at the group stage.

As for Man of the Match, well I think both Keepers deserve a special mention as they were outstanding, but I think this was really a Team effort so I have to give it to all 16 boys who contributed this weekend. Well done everyone.
