Tournament 2007

COLTS TOURNAMENT 2007 - BEST YET?

Report Submitted To The Calverton Echo...

The Calverton Miners Welfare Summer Football Tournament 2007 was held over the weekend of 9 and 10 June 2007 and proved to be a massive success attracting 177 teams over the 2 days. This was the ninth tournament which has been staged since the inaugural one in 1999 and like most other years we were fortunate to have some glorious weather for the main part.

The Calverton Tournament is now being recognized as one of the biggest and best in the county and this year was adopted by Nottinghamshire FA as the Nottinghamshire FA County Festival and we hope we did them proud!

An added bonus from this is that our next season’s under 10 team have been invited as the Nottinghamshire FA representatives to go forward and compete in the FA National Festival at Wembley on 6 August with at least one of their games taking place on the pitch at the New Wembley Stadium.

The event was backed by McDonalds who provided a certificate for each player who entered and attracted extensive coverage by the Nottingham Football Post who have ran two separate two page features over consecutive Saturdays.

There was a magnificent turnout of volunteers from our club with a lot of new faces, particularly from our younger age groups getting involved and putting in a lot of effort during the weekend.

Our referees – all sporting specially printed T shirts with light hearted logos on the back did a brilliant job.

There were well over 400 games of football, around 1400 participants and we estimate around 3000 people attending.

Sunday afternoon was the busiest period with 55 teams playing across 10 pitches with the under 7, 8 and 9 age groups. We estimate that over 1000 people were here for that session alone.

A few well know local football people attended including former Forest striker David Johnson who was kind enough to carry out one of the trophy presentations for the Sunday morning winners.

The tournament organisers received a lot of complimentary comments from the teams that attended which is superb spur to do it again next year!! The most important thing is that the vast majority of boys and girls who played over the weekend enjoyed the experience.

During the Saturday sessions, Calverton had 3 teams which reach the final of their age groups but unfortunately the winner’s trophy eluded them on every occasion. In the morning the Calverton MW Under 12 Red team drew with Southwell Lions only to get pipped in extra time by the golden goal. This was followed in the afternoon by the Calverton MW Under 11 Blue team who lost to Rainworth Tigers by 4-0. The team had played exceptionally well throughout the tournament before the wheels came off in the final although the result was rather flattering for Rainworth. The Under 14s put up a tremendous showing to get the Red team through to the final having seen off some strong teams to get there before going down to the only goal of the match against Southchurch Colts B.

A special mention is warranted for the four under 12 boys who stepped in at almost no notice to fill a late vacancy in the under 13 tournament and played (with the agreement of the other teams) with a borrowed goalkeeper and no substitutes. Some of these lads were not even at the tournament and were ‘rounded up’ by David Lee and Tim Kirkham. Playing against teams older than themselves they did themselves proud by drawing 3 of their 4 group games and only losing to a strong Toton team.

Congratulations to all the winners, a big thank you to all the teams who entered and an enormous thanks to all the people who volunteered to make the weekend the success it was.

The following age groups were decided on a league, then knock out basis with these final results:

Under 9 boys - Pegasus Broncos 0 Arnold Town Blue 1 (golden goal)

The final placings being as follows:

All the teams mentioned above received individual trophies and a team trophy to the winners.

Tournament Thanks

A number of our people received kind verbal compliments over the weekend for the way the tournament went. Here are one or two messages which have been received which reflect on the efforts of everyone involved over the weekend. Choc has written personally to all team managers to ask that they pass similar sentiments on to all volunteers and helpers for a great club effort.

From Dennis Gleason, Southwell Utd Chairman to David Lee

It was a good day at Calverton and please pass on our congratulations to the organisers who did a great job. If they're looking for feedback then my only suggestion would be more programmes.

See you next week.

Cheers, Dennis
