WEDNESDAY 11th APRIL 2007

CALVERTON COLTS UNDER 12's 2 V OLYMPIAKOS 1

The Boys had been looking forward to this match especially as we had a long break through postponed games & Easter.

The game itself lived up to expectations and was a very competitive contest. Technically Olympiakos were excellent, some great individuals and they worked well as a team. Calverton responded with some good football of their own and were just as creative. First chance of the game fell to Calverton with Kieran making a breakthrough on the right, a sweeping cross found Brinsley who just sliced it past the left hand post. Minutes later a Brinsley headed in from a corner only for it to be cleared off the line. At the other end Olympiakos had some long-range shots but Mathew dealt with these comfortably. Kieran might have put Calverton ahead as he used his speed to get around the defence but once again the ball was pulled wide of the Post. It was Olympiakos who opened the scoring a cross from the right causing confusion between Charlie & Liam and the striker on hand to put it away. Calverton came back had a good period of procession, William putting two excellent crosses from the left to test the Olympiakos defence. A set piece put Calverton on level terms, a free kick on the edge of the box converted by Michael into the roof of the net.

Half time 1-1

For the opening 10 minutes of the second period Olympiakos took control in midfield but Calverton’s back four held firm. Calverton once again came back into the game and really didn’t like conceding again at that time. The midfield were competing well and 15 Minutes into the half Kieran found the ball at his feet on the edge of the box opened his body and struck the ball into the top corner leaving the keeper stranded, 2-1 Calverton. He should have added another when he beat the offside trap, sprinting onto a through ball from his own half, but despite beating the keeper it once again went wide of the right hand post. It was nail biting last 5 minutes as Olympiakos threw players forward to find the equaliser. But Calverton held firm at the back for a 2-1 win.

It was an excellent performance from both teams and although we won I believe a draw would have been just as satisfying as Olympiakos had played very well.

Scorers: Michael Lee, Kieran Johnson

Man of the Match : The Squad (13 excellent performances)
