Saturday 24th October Old Elizabethans II (Home)

On a fairly bleak Saturday afternoon for the first time I managed to name an unchanged side, looking for our second win in the league. After a good performance last week we started the stronger of the two teams as we have done in previous weeks however we seem to lack that killer touch in front of goal, and again it showed with a couple of good chances going to waste. Old Elizabethans are a dogged side and after soaking up some good Calverton pressure they came into there own and were creating some chances for themselves most of them going over, wide or rock steady Lee, Smithy or De Jonge in their way, to be honest we were glad the half – time whistle blew.

0-0  Half- time

Second half and we really were starting to struggle especially in the middle where they seemed to be getting so much space and time that they didn’t know what to do with. In the end it showed and they went on to score a goal 1-0 down and in previous weeks we would have conceded at least one more but we have new resolve now that keeps us in games like these and if we were just a bit more dogged in our performances then I believe we will get out of the trouble we are in. We restarted and took the game to them and for all our hard-work we scored a great goal the ball came over from Jamie Humphries and up went our new-boy James to score a brilliant header. A goal that we deserved however for some unknown reason we then seem to go gung-ho and leave ourselves open to counter-attacks and that is how they got the winner completely against the run of play they broke down our right pulled the ball back and there was the striker to pop it into the back of the net.

We deserved something from this and it is completely gutting we got nothing I am proud of the lads I have got though they are resolute and I truly believe they are better than the scorelines have shown recently.

Oh and a big thanks to Gary Hope who did an outstanding job in the middle of the park.

Saturday 18th October Intermediate Cup Lady Bay (h)

Well what a difference a week makes after a dour performance the week before against Derbyshire ams I had a lot to think about and decided a change in formation was needed we started with an attacking looking 3-5-2.

The Match started and we were again matching them evenly all over the pitch having the lion share of posession we created a couple of chances but nothing to write home about we were still looking a bit ropey at the back with our new formation and couldn't quite get the hang of it and that is how the first goal came about a good attack from lady bay and we were stretched down our right they pulled the ball back and there was a lady bay midfielder storming on to put the ball past Stuart Oh dear.

However we came back with a new strike force of Tom and Craig we looked dangerous and pacey upfront and it was the pair of them that created our goal a great ball from Craig was fed to Tom who steadied himself and pulled the trigger to put the ball in the the bottom corner, Good Goal, after that not much happened of note and the half time whistle came.

Half - Time 1-1

Second half and we really took the game to them Sneath and Jonny were doing really well in the midfield and were finding and creating space and our wingers of Shaun and Diy were causing problems, not that lady bay weren't they had a couple of good oppurtunities that could of put them ahead, one clean through and stuart pulled off a magnificent save. Then it happened we broke down the right Jamie Humphries with a storming run and he spotted Diy clear in the middle who hit the sweetest left foot shot that went crashing into the top left hand corner of the net what a beauty (ps we will never forget about it will we James), we then won a penalty which Diy duly dispatched brilliant 3-1, and we went into cruise control and our defensive frailties showed again with a tap in for lady bay there was 15 to go. However Jamie Humphries had been causing a few problems since he came on and we created a cushion that we needed when he broke down the right Tom walters received the ball and Jamie continued his run Toms ball came across Jamie chalenged for it and it went into the back of the net 4-2.

Final five minutes were played out and the final whistle went a deserved 4-2 victory and a truly sensational performance WELL DONE LADS, Derby Ams in the next round.

Saturday 11th October Derbyshire (a)

Well what can I say the less the better to be quite honest, in a game which we should have been wanting to win we went out there and gave a performance like a Sunday pub team balls going a stray, missing challenges and chances like they were there for fun.

In a lack lustre first half the boys failed to turn up and it was Derbyshire who were looking like a team above us in the league rather than us above them they had more zest and life about them and they carved open a number of good chances which if it hadn't been for brilliant defending could of cost us dearly and in the end it did we gave away a silly goal when poor old Stuart was found wanting. Then we gave away a penalty when in all fairness Smithy got the ball, but somehow they missed we then conceded again, 2-0 however we had started to get a foothold in the game and we were starting to test the defence of Derbyshire and we could have scored when we were 3 against 2 but somehow we missed.

Half time 2-0

Second half was really good for us actually we played some nice neat football at times but we lack a goalscorer although after conceding another goal Paul de Jonge did manage to score a really good goal. and Jonny Albone could have had another when he was one on one with the keeper but he saved very well, they went on to score a fourth when we was pushing hard. (Bring on Lady Bay - Lets show em lads)

Starting Line Up Stuart Mayfield, Jason Jacques, Chris Smith, Lee Nightingale, DIY, Shaun Watt, Jonny Albone, James Stephenson, Paul De Jonge, Micheal Sneath, Craig Martin

Man Of The Match (which can I say was not easy) Smithy

Saturday 4th October - Lady Bay (h)

With Calverton full of confidence after last weeks win we took the field against a team who currently sat top of the league and hadn't lost a game yet.
We set up as 4-5-1 and in the early stages we matched them pretty much all over the pitch without James Walters we gave Daniel Randerson a run out up front all on his own, we were creating most of the attacking and lady bay had started to become disillusioned obviously thinking this would be an easy game, however lady luck was not on our side that day and Lady bay got a corner which they stuck in our box we managed to clear the ball but only as far as the edge of the area a player stuck it back into the danger zone and there was lady bay's striker to hit a sweet volley past Stuart who had no chance Good Goal.
Now normally our heads would have dropped and we would have conceded 4 or 5 but it is amazing what a win can do and it was actually us who were having the better of it Jonny albone who was doing brilliant down the right had a couple of good chances one was saved and the other rebounding off the post, however the best chance fell to our midfielder after great work down the right again a cross came in and he was all alone at the back post and he somehow missed.

Half Time 1-0 down

In the Second half it carried on in much the same vain with us on top but not being able to put the ball into the back of the net. We huffed and puffed but to no avail we stuck three up front but still we couldn't buy a goal, whilst pushing for the equaliser we were somewhat fortunate not to concede a couple of times at the other end the most noteworthy being a through ball and there striker was clean through but a pacey DIY came racing back and made a super sliding challenge that stopped him in his tracks and gave the opposition a freekick (lucky not to go down to ten men).

Full Time 1-0 to Lady Bay

Starting Line-up Stuart Mayfield, Jason Jacques, Carl Smith, Lee Nightingale, James Davies, Darren Watt, James Stephenson, Shaun Watt, Tom Walters, Jonny Albone, Daniel Randerson Man Of The Match-Lee Nightingale

September 27th - Derbyshire Amateurs (h)

Well at last no new faces however we had a few let downs and only had 12 players.

This had been hyped as a relegation battle Derbyshire Amateurs bottom and us second from bottom neither team had won.

The match started and you could see that there wasn't much confidence out there however we were starting to win the midfield battle and created a number of chances.

Then after about fifteen minutes we had a shot outside the penalty box and it hit one of there defenders smack on the hand PENALTY after much talking, up stepped a confident James Davis to score a beautifully taken penalty 1-0. We looked confident and really started to take the game to them and how we were not 3-0 up I will never know however some great link up play between the always willing Shaun Watt and John Albone saw an absolute corker of a goal from the edge of the area Johnny Albone with a cracker.

The match sorted of faded after that however some magical footwork on a couple of occasions from James Walters did almost give us another goal but the keeper kept them in it.

We seemed to be coasting just as we thought this was going to be easy they scored a goal a sneaky effort at the back post.

Derbyshire had built up a head of steam and looked slightly dangerous thankfully Half Time came.

Half Time 2-1 In the lead

We Started the second half pretty much as the first had finished jittery to say the least. We plodded along without particularly looking dangerous but Derby Ams were starting to get the better of us. However our set-pieces from the ever dangerous Paul De Jonge had got them a bit scared and it was from a delightful free Kick from that man, that put Carl Smith in a great position to head home from close range.
That finished the game off

Our First Win Magnificent

Starting Line Up: Stuart Mayfield, Jason Jacques, Paul De Jonge, Carl Smith, James Davis, Darren Watt, Shaun Watt, Johnny Albone, Craig Martin, Tom Walters, James Walters. Man Of The Match - Shaun Watt

September 20th - EMTEC (a)

Our First away Game and again there was new faces in the dressing room.

As in the first game we started brightly with EMTEC only having ten on the pitch we started to run them ragged the two wingers of Shaun Watt and Craig Martin putting there full backs to the test but for all of our huff and puff no goals came.

Twenty Minutes in and again a complete mess between goalkeeper and defence saw there speedy striker get his first goal of four past us.
OH how our heads dropped 2-0 shortly came three followed and it looked like we had fallen apart again. However we stuck at the task and a battling Paul de Jonge Tapped in a goal at the back post to our Jubilation it was very much deserved. Reality set in about 5 minutes later when they got there fourth.

Half Time 4-1 Down

Half time subs saw Darren bring himself on to sturdy the defence replacing Ian English Who had battled hard in the first half

The second half started and not much happened of note in the first 15 minutes. Although they did score there Fifth by this time the game was pretty much over.

A delightful free-kick from Paul de Jonge saw our speed demon Craig Martin score a goal at the back post made up for all the misses ah Craig?

They then went onto score another as we were pushing for a goal we were caught out at the back.

Full Time 6-2 to EMTEC

Starting Line Up Stuart Mayfield, Lee Nightingale, James Davis, Carl Smith, Ian English, John Albone, Michael Sneath, Paul De Jonge, Shaun Watt, James Walters, Craig Martin. Man Of The Match - Paul De Jonge

September 13th - Eaton Hall College (h)

The first game of the season came and went in a flash with the majority of players not knowing each others names never mind how they played or where they played. There was a few pre-match Jitters but nothing really to worry about.

We started the match with an early chance a great ball through from Johnny Albone to our speedy winger Craig Martin almost put us 1-0 up if it hadn't been for a terrific save from Eaton's keeper, for the first ten minutes of the game we were pretty evenly matched and the game flowed very well.

Then all hell broke loose they had a Number 7 who was deadly and after slight mis-communication between keeper and defense they scored an easy goal, 2 minutes later and even worse we had conceded a tap in again the number 7 causing us all sorts of trouble, our heads dropped and we didn't know what to do. One of our up and coming stars Jason Jacques took a slight knock and had to come off bearing in mind only 30 minutes had gone and we were 3-0 down so a tactical switch was made by new manager Darren Watt, putting Carl Smith at the back and putting on a slightly injured Club Captain Michael Sneath, and it seemed to do the trick for 5 minutes at least before we conceded again.

Half Time came 4-0 down

Tactical change by the manager saw a hard working Daniel Randerson brought off to be replaced by Shaun Watt.

We didn't start the second half very well conceding early on, Eaton hall were a well organised outfit that had a lot of older more experienced guys that had obviously played together for a while. Another substitution by the manager saw Tom Walters Brought off and the manager bringing himself on an inspirational choice as well. With only a few touches under his belt Darren picked the ball up on the halfway line and ran towards the goal everyone backed off and he just had a ping it took a wicked deflection off a defender and spun into the GOAL.

Again we started to match them and duly scored a second this time a corner came across and an energetic James Davis (DIY) poked a shot towards goal that on route took a deflection and went into the net GOAL number 2.

After that not much happened and the match finished with Calverton Losing 5-2

Starting Line-Up Stuart Mayfield, Jason Jacques, James Stephenson, Lee Nightingale, James Davis, John Albone, Carl Smith, Tom Walters, Craig Martin, Paul De Jonge, Daniel Randerson. Man Of The Match - Lee Nightingale
