Operations started on the Forth Bridge in January 1883. It took seven
years to build employing up to 4,630 workers working 24 hours a day, 6 days a week. It was
designed by Benjamin Baker and Sir John Fowler whose other work included a major part of
London Underground and the Aswan Dam on the Nile. The main contractor was William Arrol.
