outRAGE graphics - portfolio - person tutorial
create an msn-style person.
tutorial:
Please bear in mind that this is my first ever tutorial! Adobe Photoshop is required.
- Start with a new image, 500px by 500px, with a white background.
- Create a new layer.
- Set the foreground colour to #EB7171 and the background colour to #BF1010
- Draw a smallish circle towards the top of the canvas - this is to be the head.
- In Layer Styles, add a 2px stroke of the colour #9A0F0F.
- Ctrl-click the layer.
- Add a radial gradient from foreground to background using the following settings:
- Mode: Normal
- Opacity: 100%
- Dither: Yes
- Transparency: Yes
You should end up with an image something like this:

- Create a new layer.
- Ctrl-click the layer with the head on it.
- Move the selection 8 pixels left and 8 pixels down
- Hold Ctrl and Shift and click the layer with the original head on it.
- Fill the new selection with white.
- Move the white crescent to just within the main circle:

- Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Settings:
- Set the opacity of this layer to 60%.
- Create a new layer below the original layer but above the background layer.
- Using the eliptical marquee tool, make a large round (but not circular) selection like the one below:

- Grab the rectangular marquee tool, hold Alt and remove the bottom of the selection by clicking and dragging over what you wish to remove.
- Fill the selection with a radial gradient like the one used for the head.
- Add a two pixel stroke of colour #9A0F0F.

- Add a new layer.
- Ctrl-click the layer with the head on it.
- Move the selection 8 pixels left and 8 pixels down
- Hold Ctrl and Shift and click the layer with the original body on it.
- Fill the new selection with white.
- Move the white shape to just within the main body.
- Use the polgon lasso tool and remove a triangle from the bottom of the white shape:

- Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Settings:
- Set the opacity of this layer to 60%.
- Create a new layer below all the other layers but above the background.
- Use the eliptical marquee tool to make a selection like the one below. This may take several attempts so be patient!

- Fill the selection with the foreground colour (Alt + Backspace)
- Add a two pixel stroke of colour #9A0F0F.
- Press Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer.
- Using any marquee tool you like, delete the left 'arm' on the dupliate layer, and then delete the right 'arm' on the original layer.
- Ctrl-click the layer with the left arm on it.
- Fill the selection with the usual radial gradient, making the arm light at the shoulder and dark near the end.
- Repeat the last two steps with the right arm.
- Select the later with the left arm on it, Ctrl-click the layer with the body on it, and press delete.
- Leaving the selection there, click on the layer with the right arm and press delete again.
- You should now have a (fairly fat!) person such as the one below:

- Add highlights to the right arm (and only the right arm) using the same technique described in points 8 to 15.
- To add that extra bit of depth, select the body layer, and apply an inner bevel with all the usual settings apart from size set to 250px. Repeat this with head and the arms.
- You can also add detail such as a tie by using the polygon lasso tool on the body layer, and deleting the shape you wish to appear white.
