Mountain Biking in the Alpujarras: The Mecina traverse loop
From the house turn right along the street for 10m before taking the first left out of the bottom of the village and onto the track to Fondales (loose rock, hairpin bend, steep in places). After 200m the track crosses the road, continuing on 10m to the right. After a further 150m you will enter Fondales. Drop down through the village until you find a signpost indicating the direction of the river. Follow this track (similar to above) to the footbridge crossing the river. Once across follow the track (right) as it climbs the mountain side. The lower stretches are definitely rideable before becoming difficult as the gradient increases and the track becomes rocky forcing you to dismount. Higher up the path broadens and once again becomes rideable. Above the cattle station the track forms a T junction. Turn left, the track having become a jeep trail, and traverse the mountain side for 6 km. (The right hand turn will take you on a long decent into Orgiva but should be avoided unless you have a chauffeur and vehicle waiting to ferry you back to Mecina-Fondales via the road.) At the end of this trail you will reach a farmstead with the track, left, leading down through meadow for 300m before reaching the top of the "zig-zags". At this point the track becomes very steep with a loose rocky surface and hair-pin bends. This section of track is also very exposed with life threatening drops and should only be undertaken by experienced technical riders. At the bottom of the zig-zags cross the river onto the left hand track which climbs gradually to join up with the Ferreirola-Busquistar track (see Mecina-Busquistar-Ferreirola loop above). On reaching Ferreirola you can either take the road back to Mecinilla or the track to Fondales (see Mecinilla-Ferreirola-Fondales loop above) and the road from Fondales to Mecinilla.
