Mountain Biking in the Alpujarras:
Routes higher up the valley between Capileira and Trevelez
The GR421 main road runs up the valley toward Trevelez. Although my knowledge of routes and tracks above this road is limited, it is possible to climb up to Trevelez by using jeep tracks. Traveling toward Pitres from where the Mecina-Fondales road joins the GR421 a jeep track can be seen running from the left hand side of the road after approximately 150m. This will take you to over the tops to Capileira. Further along the GR421, between Pitres and Portugos, a similar track can be found - a third runs up past the farmacia (look out for the green cross sign) from the square in Portugos. These tracks climb gradually to a junction where the right hand track is signposted to Trevelez and the left hand to Capileira. There are numerous technical lesser tracks, ideal for descending, leaving the jeep track at intervals.
