Sightseeing in the Alpujarras and the Surrounding Region

Local Sights and Activities
As an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Alpujarras have been protected from commercial property development, maintaining the traditional Moorish village appearance with their stone-built, white washed and flat roofed houses. The region of La Taha comprises the villages of Capilerilla, Pitres, Mecina, Atalbeitar, Fondales, Ferreirola and Mecinilla. Situated between the Mediterranean Sea and the breathtakingly beautiful Sierra Nevada National Park, Mecinilla is ideally located for a wide range of activities. In addition to the many walking routes criss-crossing the National and Natural Parks which take the walker to hidden springs, rivers, old mills and ruins, amongst a backdrop of panoramic views, the region offers opportunities for mountain biking, horse trekking and, during the winter months, skiing. Alternatively you can tour the villages visiting the craft shops of local artisans - potters, weavers, woodworkers - relax with a cool drink in one of the many cafes, bars and restaurants or stretch out and soak up the sun.
Alhambra Granada Alhambra Palace

Granada and the Alhambra
Most visitors to the region will want to take in Granada, a beautiful, rather compact city which is famed for The Alhambra comprising three distinct groups of buildings - the Casa Real, the Generalife and the Alcazaba. It is, however, useful to be aware of the need to book in advance as with the vast number of annual visitors ticket numbers have now been restricted. It is possible to purchase a ticket on the day on the site itself, but this usually involves long queues, especially in high season. Better then to ring ahead (902 22 44 60), from anywhere in Spain or abroad, and reserve tickets for collection using a Visa/Mastercard or book through the internet at www.decompras.bbv.es Either way you will be given a reference number that allows you to collect your tickets from any Banco Bilbao Vizcaya (BBV) office or the Alhambra ticket office on the site itself. To check opening times, recent changes and booking procedures further you can log on to www.alhambra-patronato.es

Getting to the sea
Should you want a day at the beach, away from the peace of the mountains, you simply need to get up early and drive southwards towards the coast. Salobrena is relatively unspoiled but you might want to drive west for about 30 minutes on reaching the coast road to find the small beaches and coves situated in the natural park - watch out for green signs on the left and the small parking areas with wooden viewing platforms that look out to sea. There are paths down to the coves.
