Walking in the Alpujarras
Walk 4
The Mecinilla traverse loop
(Approx. 5 hours) From the house turn right and then take a left onto the Fondales track after walking about 10m. 200m on, this track crosses the Mecina-Fondales road - dog leg right 5m, then left, before continuing on the track for a further 150m and entering the top of the village (as for walks 1 and 3). Drop down through the village until you find a sign post indicating the direction of the river. Follow this track downwards, past a number small plots of land and through some woodland and you will hear the river and come to the footbridge that crosses the gorge. Once across follow the track (right) as it climbs the mountain side. Higher up the path broadens. Carry on for some time until you pass an old cattle station - here the track forms a T junction. Turn left, the track having become a jeep trail, and traverse the mountain side for about 6 km. (The right hand turn will take you on a very long walk down into Orgiva but should be avoided unless you have a chauffeur and vehicle waiting to ferry you back to Mecina-Fondales via the road or have a bus timetable!) At the end of this trail you will reach a farmstead with the track going left and leading down through meadow for 300m before reaching the top of the "zig-zags". At this point the track becomes very steep with a loose rocky surface and hair-pin bends - meander down to the bottom and cross the river. Here you will see a ruin or two and can find a spot to picnic. Once rested, take the left hand track which climbs gradually to join up with the Ferreirola-Busquistar track (see walk 3 above). Follow this heading into Ferreirola where you can either take the road back to Mecinilla or the track to Fondales and the road or track from Fondales to Mecinilla (see walk 1)
