Walking in the Alpujarras
Walk 6
Capileira-Poqueira Ravine
(Approx 45 mins each way) This walk begins in the main square of Capileira. Walk towards the church and take the street that runs down the righthand side of it. Bear right and follow the cobbled streets out of the village. On the edge of the village you will come to a concreted path that winds leftwards and downwards. Here you want to bear right onto a more rugged path that takes you down to the river - you will see a small signpost for the bridge (puente). The path winds through open hillside and wooded areas, always bearing rightwards and downwards. You pass one or two cortijos en route and at this point you will begin to hear the rushing of the falls as the river flows rapidly down from the high Alpujarra. As you reach the bottom of the ravine you will see the bridge, the river and some large rock formations arising out of the water. This is an ideal spot for a picnic, an hour or two with a good book or even a swim. To get back to Capileira, simply do the route in reverse, rewarding yourself with a cool glass of refreshments at the top!
