Walking in the Alpujarras
Capielira-Poqueira Ravine-Budhist Retreat-Pampaneira (Approx. 3 hours) This walk follows the same route as walk 7 but having dipped your feet in the river, carry on over the bridge, taking the road leftwards and leading away from Capileira. Follow the western slopes of the Poqueira Ravine, climbing upwards through La Atalaya and on to the grounds of the Tibetan Buddhist Retreat, O Sel Lin (the place of light). From here a young boy has been chosen to train as a prospective Dalai Lama in India after being recognised by the present Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of Yeshé, a former ringpoche, or head lama. This is a special place, with sweeping views of La Alpujarra, its villages far below, and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea beyond the coastal mountain ranges of La Contraviesa and Lújar. The route then descends, crossing the ravine once more, into the picturesque village of Pampaneira.
