Food & Wine - There are some superb restaurants throughout the area from cheap tratorias to specialist Tuscan restaurants. You could drive along the Strada del Vino in the hills surrounding Lucca (Colline Lucchesi) and visit some of the many fattorias to taste the wines where they are made. However, an evening spent in the house cooking, using the finest of local ingredients and watching the sunset over the mountains is one of the owner’s favourite pastimes.
Cultural - Trips to Florence, Pisa and the beautiful Garfagnana region are all within driving distance. Lucca, (45 minutes drive) is well worth a visit. Hire a tandem and cycle the circumference of the town on top of the wall! The town has a large number of designer shops and specialist food stores selling cheeses and olive oil produced locally in Lucca. If homes and gardens are your thing then the spectacular villas of the once wealthy Lucchesi families with their renaissance gardens such as Villa Garzoni are well worth a visit.
Swimming - Excellent outdoor and indoor pools (supplied from thermal springs) are available in Bagni di Lucca (30 minutes drive)
Walking & trekking - The house offers great opportunities for walking, it could be a short walk through the labyrinth of streets in the village or for the more energetic a walk down to Botri Gorge (Orrido di Botri) beneath Montefegatesi. There are numerous paths in the valleys beneath the cottage or walk up and through the wild flower meadows, which line Prato Fiorito, a 4000 ft mountain above Montefegatesi.
Dancing - Montefegatesi has a regular dance held on a Saturday night in the village square during July and August.
