County Championship

Tuesday 17/4/12

The Bronze Division Final between Janet Cavaciuti of Woodlake Park and Rosemary Ford of Newport was played in excellent spirit and in mainly fine but rather breezy conditions. It was a close and fluctuating game with never more than one hole in it either way until Janet won on the 17th green.

The presentations of the trophies to both Janet and Rosemary and also to Jordan Ryan of Newport who was the winner of the Barbara Francis Memorial Trophy for Junior Squad members, but who was on holiday at the time of the presentations on Friday, will be made at the beginning of the next Committee Meeting at The Parc Golf Club at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 15th May.

Friday 13/4/12

After the storms on the previous afternoon, Friday [13th!!] turned out to be a much better day with warm sunshine after a rather chilly 7.15 a.m. start and some excellent golf was played on a course that had stood up remarkably well to the weather.

In the Silver Division the results of the unfinished second round matches saw all four of the top seeds win their games with Jessica Evans winning against Rhiannon Thomas, Cerys Jenkins overcoming County Captain Ann Booth, Danielle Cobley beating Jo. Waite and Lauren Hillier winning against Patricia Fernon.

This brought the Championships back on schedule with the semi-finals bringing together four previous Champions ~ 2011 Champion, Jessica Evans playing 2009 Champion Cerys Jenkins in game 1 with 2010 Champion Danielle Cobley and Lauren Hillier [who had been Champion several times as Lauren Diggle] in game 2.

Again the games went with the seeding to bring Jessica Evans and Lauren Hillier together for the Final. There Lauren, who plays off +1, regained the trophy, remarkably just ten weeks after giving birth to son Milo.

In the Bronze Division the unfinished second round games saw the following results:
Janet Cavaciuti beat Pauline Forbes
Linda Young beat Beryl Young
Rosemary Ford beat Noelyn Allen
Ruth Stafford beat Chris Jones

In the Semi- finals County Junior Organiser Janet Cavaciuti just pipped Linda Young with the last putt of the game and Rosemary Ford beat Ruth Stafford to book her place in the Bronze Final which is to be played at St. Mellons on Tuesday with a Tee time of 9.00 a.m.

The Paton Cup for the best team at the Championships based on the four best Nett scores in either division in the qualifying rounds was won for the second year running by Dewstow, with the quartet of Catherine Nutley, Patricia Fernon, Deborah Hudson and Kate Stevens and a total of 303.

NOT be used in the County Championships.

Measuring devices
The Golf Union of Wales have decided that the use of distance measuring devices [DMDs]
will be permitted in all GUW Championships and Events.
It was therefore decided at the County Meeting held at The Parc G.C. on 7th February that Monmouthshire Ladies should follow suit and allow DMDs in County Competitions subject to the following regulation:

A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect her play (eg gradient, windspeed, temperature etc) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3 for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.

Lena Davidson

As most probably know, Lena Davidson has retired as County Secretary after serving for twenty years on the County Committee, the last ten of them as Secretary.

To mark the occasion Libby Hutchings organised a 'surprise' retirement party for her at Llanwern Golf Club on 16th November. This was very well attended by ladies, and some gentlemen, from many of the County Clubs. Lena said she was quite overwhealmed by the support and felt very humble. She would like to thank all who came and, in particular, Libby for organising the event and Les Dodd, Secretary at Pontypool Golf Club, for the lovely poem he recited for her..

Some of the Attendees

The County Luncheon
was held at Dewstow G.C. on 30th August with the rather disppointing number of 36 ladies attending, 26 of them from the home club. The Captain thanked those who did come for supporting the Lunch event, and everyone was delightfully entertained by Bethan Keeble who gave a piano recital. Bethan, who is studying music at Cardiff university with the aim of becoming a professional musician also uses her music for therapy. Her principal instrument is the Oboe but her recital at the lunch showed that she could also play a mean piano.

26/9/11
Congratulations:

To Christine Harries of Llanwern Golf Club who is the Welsh Senior Ladies Champion for 2011 after clinching the title at Abergele Golf Club in North Wales. Chris carded rounds of 76 & 78 against the course par of 74 to finish on + 6 and win by one shot from Jane Rees of Hendon in a field that included former Curtis Cup player Vikki Thomas. She has also been selected to play for Wales in the Senior Ladies Home International Matches at Tramor Golf Club in Ireland.

To Chris Rossiter and Roberta Budd of Newport Golf Club, who, having won the Regional Final of The Coronation Foursomes held at Cradoc Golf Club with 39 points, qualified for the National Final of the event which was held over the Eden Course at St. Andrews where they gained a very creditable fourth place with 31 points.
