County Championships ~ Day 3

The early fog threatened by the weather forcast did not materialise so the Semi Finals went ahead as planned.

The Championship Semi Finals saw comfortable wins, both by 5 & 4, for Defending Champion Jessica Evans over Caroline Cole and current Welsh Under 16 Strokeplay Champion Jordan Ryan over Cerys Jenkins to set up a final between Newport clubmates Jessica and Jordan.

The final turned out to be an extremely pulsating affair and Jessica and Jordan arrived at the 18th tee all square. Jordan played her second shot to the green first and Jessica then hit a wonderful shot over the bunker to inches from the flag. This left Jordan with a longish putt to take the match up the 19th but it just lipped out so Jessica became County Champion for the third time in four years following her previous sucesses at Newport in 2011 and Woodlake Park last year.

Jessica Evans ~ County Champion 2014

The Bronze Division Semi Finals saw Janice Williams of Newport G.C.beat Marian Workman and Eleanor Willis of St. Pierre G.C. overcome Pat Perkins to set up a 'Senior' v 'Junior' Final with Eleanor, who celebrated her 13th birthday during the qualifying round on Wednesday, thoroughly enjoying her very first taste of matchplay golf.

In the Final Janice quickly went three holes up but Eleanor showed maturity beyond her years to claw her way back into the game and had levelled by the 13th hole. She then proceded to win the next three to win Bronze Championship Final by 3 & 2.

Eleanor Willis ~ Bronze Division Champion 2014

The Paton Cup which is awarded to the club with the four best Nett Scores in the Championships was won by St. Pierre Golf Club.

County Championships ~ Day 2
Thankfully, the weather was fine today and the Championship schedule is now back on course. (Pun intended!).

At Pontypool, the morning qualifying round produced an exceptional round from 16 year old Angharad Evans of St. Pierre G.C. who smashed the eleven year old Course Record of 74 set by Samantha Birks in 2003 by no fewer than 4 strokes by shooting a Gross 70, Nett 65.

xxxx Angharad Evans New Course Record Holder

Angharad thus lead the eight qualifiers for the matchplay stages. There she was joined by Rhiannon Thomas, Jordan Ryan, Jessica Evans, Christine Harries, Danielle Cobley, Cerys Jenkins and Caroline Cole.

For the list of the Gross scores CLICK HERE
and CLICK HERE for the Nett results.

In the Quarter Finals Caroline Cole came out on top against Angharad 3 and 2,
Jessica Evans beat Chris Harries 5 and 4
Jordan Ryan overcame Danielle Cobley 3 and 1
and Cerys Jenkins won against Rhiannon Thomas 1up.

The Semi Final lineup sees:
Caroline Cole v Jessica Evans
and Jordan Ryan v Cerys jenkins

The first two matchplay rounds of the BRONZE DIVISION were held at Raglan Parc.

The first round saw Marian Workman, Julie Thomas, Jackie Fogwill, Janice Williams, Pat Perkins, Seon Young Shah, Julie Miles and Eleanor Willis progress to the Quarter Finals.

At the Quarter Final stage the results were as follows:

Marian Workman beat Julie Thomas 4 & 2
Janice Williams beat Jackie Fogwill 4 & 3
Pat Perkins beat Seon Young Shah 2 & 1
Eleanor Willis beat Julie Miles 6 & 5

The Tenby 36 hole Scratch Competition
was held on Sunday, the 13th of April, and seven of the Monmouthshire Ladies/Girls were among the 32 who played the two rounds on the challenging links course.

In the morning round Angharad Evans did very well to score a Nett 75, one under the Competition Standard Scratch which was 76 on the par 75 course, whilst both Rhiannon Thomas and Lauren Hillier matched the CSS with Nett 76.

In Lauren's case this was also her gross score, as she plays off scratch, and she went on to match that score in the afternoon round and secure overall second place in the competition (and a voucher for £125) behind current Welsh Ladies Champion and International, Becky Harries of Haverfordwest, with another current Welsh International, Chloe Williams of Wrexham, in third place.

R.I.P.

With great sadness we learn of the death on Wednesday 21st August of
Miss Pat Roberts M.B.E., Vice President of the County Association.

The following tribute was given by Jill Edwards M.B.E.
former President of the Ladies Golf Union at Pat's Funeral

MARGARET PATRICIA ROBERTS M.B.E

1921 – 2013

We are here to celebrate the long, successful and rewarding life of our friend Pat.  Born in Haverfordwest from a golfing family (her father was a scratch golfer).

Her sister Joan, who died last year aged 102 was also a golfer and represented Denbighshire County for over 30 years and played for Wales in the Home International Matches with Pat in 1955.

During the war Pat was in the ATS and drove military lorries up and down the country, stopping at bad B&Bs on the long journeys  over poor roads.  She talked about lorries with great glee and continued to enjoy driving all her life, albeit in smaller vehicles.

Pat moved to Newport in 1947 where she met Iris Burge and became her foursomes partner for the Monmouthshire County Team.  Pat went to live with Iris and her husband Graham in Llanhennock and worked with Graham at Searle & Burge, solicitors.  Pat lived with Iris and Graham for many years.  After both Graham and later Iris died Pat moved to her home in Caerleon, left to her by Iris.

Pat was a very proud Godmother to Nichola Burge and enjoyed the friendship and support of June and Ian Burge and their family until her recent death.

I feel sure you will have many happy memories of time spent with Pat who filled her life with playing golf and afterwards with the administration of the game in Wales.  She approached both with great expertise and dedication and many of us will have experiences a little fear if we didn't match Pat's exacting standards.

Pat was a great golfer, won Championships and played golf at all levels.  Pat loved Newport Golf club and was proud of its course and traditions.  She won the Club Championship 25 times and represented Newport in League and Welsh Team Club matches for many years.

Pat won the Monmouthshire County Championship 18 times and represented the County for many years as player, Captain, President and Life Vice President.

Pat was Welsh Champion four times and represented Wales in the Home International matches from 1948 until 1970.   She also played in three European Team events and at the first Welsh Amateur Team Championships in 1964.  I travelled to Paris as a supporter.  During a visit to see Pat in hospital in June, I told her of my imminent visit to Paris to watch the 2013 Vagliano Trophy Match.  She laughed with me as I reminded her of the fun we had had together in 1964 on the golf course but also as Pat drove Iris Burge's car through the street of Paris on the wrong side of the road.  Happy recollections of nearly 50 years ago.

Pat was also Captain of the Welsh Team, Vice Captain of the Great Britain and Ireland 1966 and 1968 Curtis Cup Teams and the 1971 Vagliano Trophy Team.  Pat was also Manager of the Commonwealth Team in Canada 1967, which was won by GB&I.  Towards the end of her playing career Pat became Chairman of the Welsh Ladies' Golf Union and took on her role as Honorary Secretary of the Welsh Union in 1970 having retired from International golf.  Pat loved her role as Honorary Secretary and her attention to detail ensured the smooth running of the Championships and general administration of ladies' golf in Wales for over 20 years.  Pat was President from 1993 to 1999 and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1993 for services to golf in Wales.  So richly deserved.  Pat is also  a member of the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame.
Pat continued her long association with Newport Golf Club as Captain of the Ladies' Section in 1954 and 1964.  She was awarded Life Membership in 1970 and elected as Life Vice President of the Club in 2003.  Pat became Treasurer of the Ladies' section in 1990 and was very pleased to be involved with the 2003 Centenary Year when she was made Life Vice President.

On a personal note, I have known Pat for over 50 years.  We played for opposing County Teams but together for Wales in Home International Matches and European Team Championships.  Pat attended my wedding and some special birthdays and we enjoyed her 90th birthday in the beautiful home of June and Ian Burge.

We had great fun together and both enjoyed a love of good food and wine.

My final words are from Tegwen Matthews, current successful Curtis Cup Captain from Cardiff, now living in South Africa who on hearing of Pat's death wrote:

“Rest in Peace Pat Roberts.  Welsh Golfing Legend whose commitment and dedication to Welsh Golf was immeasurable – a very, very special lady”.

Measuring devices
The Golf Union of Wales have decided that the use of distance measuring devices [DMDs]
will be permitted in all GUW Championships and Events.
It was therefore decided at the County Meeting held at The Parc G.C. on 7th February that Monmouthshire Ladies should follow suit and allow DMDs in County Competitions subject to the following regulation:

A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect her play (eg gradient, windspeed, temperature etc) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3 for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.

County Championships

The County Championships were held in the traditional  slot of Easter week although the overnight frost and the bitter Easterly wind made it seem more like Christmas than Easter.  However 40 entrants in each of the two divisions braved the cold for the Stroke play Qualifiers,  with the Bronze Division being held at Monmouth Golf Club and the Silver Division at Woodlake Park.  The 16 best gross scores at Monmouth then joined their silver division colleagues at Woodlake Park Golf Club for the match play stages.

At Monmouth the best Nett Score and the Coronation Medal was won by Sarah Payne of Newport Golf Club with Joan Bool of Bryn Meadows second. Beryl Young of St. Pierre Golf Club achieved the best gross score and led the sixteen qualifiers to Woodlake Park as top seed.  The sixteen included two  members of the County Junior Squad and both were destined to make a mark.

In the first round, at the bottom of the draw, Sophie Madsen of St. Mellons Golf Club, six weeks before her 14th birthday, beat the number 2 seed Sarah Payne by 2 & 1 to move into the quarter final where she then lost by 3 & 2 to Patricia John of Newport Golf Club.  Patricia then beat Sue Edwards of  Monmouth Golf Club by 3 & 2 to get to the Final.

At the top of the draw, top seed Beryl Young reached the Semi Final with wins by 4 & 2 over Claire Bartlett of Pontnewydd Golf Club and by 2 up over Janice Williams of Newport Golf Club.  In the Semi Final Beryl came up against the other Junior, 14 year old  Rhian Morgan of St. Pierre Golf Club, and it was Rhian who came out on top with a 3 & 2 win.  Rhian then kept up her good form to beat Patricia by 5 & 4  and become Bronze Division Champion.

In the Silver Division Stroke play Qualifying round at Woodlake Park,  the best gross and number one seed for the Match play stages was Welsh International Jessica Evans of Newport Golf Club with Danielle Cobley of Pontnewydd Golf Club second.  Carolyn Pritchard of Llanwern Golf Club won the prize for best Nett , with Jane Paske of Woodlake Park second and Welsh Senior International Christine Harries from Llanwern Golf Club, won the prize for the best Gross score by a Senior Lady.

The match play event saw the Semi final stage reached by 3 past Champions:
Jessica Evans who beat County Selector Catherine Nutley of Dewstow Golf Club by 4 & 3 and Welsh Senior International Patricia Fernon,  also of Dewstow Golf Club by 2 up;
Cerys Jenkins of Bryn Meadow Golf Club who beat Caroline Cole of Monmouthshire Golf Club and Carolyn Pritchard of Llanwern Golf Club by 5 & 3;
and Danielle Cobley who beat Jessica Gabriel of Pontypool Golf Club by 5 & 4 and Rhiannon Thomas of St. Pierre Golf Club by 2 up.
They were joined by 15 year old Jordan Ryan of Newport Golf Club who had done excellently by beating Jo. Waite of St. Mellons Golf Club by 5 & 3 and Chris Harries by 5 & 4.
Both Semi Final matches ended in 2 & 1 wins, for Jessica over Jordan and Danielle over Cerys.  That was also the score in the final with Jessica clinching victory to become Champion for the second time in 3 years.
However Danielle also had something to celebrate ~ it was her 21st birthday!

The Barbara Francis Memorial Trophy for the best performance at the Championships by a girl in the County Junior Squad was won by Rhian Morgan

The Paton Cup, awarded to the club with the four best Nett scores in the Stroke play Stages of the Championship was won by Newport Golf Club with the  scores of Jessica Evans, Jordan Ryan, Sarah Payne and Emma Miller being the ones to count.

We are the Champions!

L to R: Cerys Jenkins, Rhiannon Thomas, Chris Harries,Jessica Evans, Angharad Evans, Lauren Hillier, Ann Booth [Captain] & Patricia Fernon flying the flag for Monmouthshire.

Sunday, 23rd September at Ashburnham was a cold, very wet and extremely windy day but, never the less, it turned out to be 'Red Letter' day for Monmouthshire Ladies Golf as we beat last years winners, Mid Wales, to become the Welsh Ladies' County Champions for the first time!

In the morning Foursomes, the pairing of Lauren Hillier and Angharad Evans got the first point on the board with a 3 & 1 win but the other two games were lost to leave the lunchtime score 2 - 1 to Mid Wales.

The rain stopped for a short while during the afternoon singles but then came back with a vengeance together with a near gale force wind off the sea. However, as they had done in the last round against Glamorgan, the Monmouthshire ladies coped better with the elements than their Mid Wales opponents as the first four games produced wins by 6 & 4 for Lauren Hillier, by 7 & 6 for Jessica Evans, by 7 & 6 for Rhiannon Thomas and by 4 & 2 for Chris Harries to achieve the magic, winning, 5 point mark, so the final two games were conceded to allow the ladies to escape what were by now the worse conditions of the day and return to the comfort of the Clubhouse.

Despite the dark clouds at Ashburnham, with three of the winning team still teenagers, two in their twenties and two Welsh Ladies' Senior Internationals, the future looks bright for
Monmouthshire Ladies Golf!

For the second consecutive year we are through to the final of the
Welsh Ladies County Championships!

This is to be held at Ashburnham Golf Club on Sunday 23rd September
and , as last year, our opponents will be Mid Wales.

Our first match this year was held on 9th July at the Monmouthshire Club at Abergavenny where a fine all round team performance resulted in a very convincing win by 8 - 1 against Carmarthen and Pembrokeshire. I

This win set up the game with Glamorgan held at Southerndown G.C. on 18th July as a decider and,as County Captain Ann Booth reported," In horrendous conditions the team played with great commitment and hung in there to win the match 5 - 4", to clinch the place in the Final.

County Championship

Tuesday 17/4/12

The Bronze Division Final between Janet Cavaciuti of Woodlake Park and Rosemary Ford of Newport was played in excellent spirit and in mainly fine but rather breezy conditions. It was a close and fluctuating game with never more than one hole in it either way until Janet won on the 17th green.

The presentations of the trophies to both Janet and Rosemary and also to Jordan Ryan of Newport who was the winner of the Barbara Francis Memorial Trophy for Junior Squad members, but who was on holiday at the time of the presentations on Friday, will be made at the beginning of the next Committee Meeting at The Parc Golf Club at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 15th May.

Friday 13/4/12

After the storms on the previous afternoon, Friday [13th!!] turned out to be a much better day with warm sunshine after a rather chilly 7.15 a.m. start and some excellent golf was played on a course that had stood up remarkably well to the weather.

In the Silver Division the results of the unfinished second round matches saw all four of the top seeds win their games with Jessica Evans winning against Rhiannon Thomas, Cerys Jenkins overcoming County Captain Ann Booth, Danielle Cobley beating Jo. Waite and Lauren Hillier winning against Patricia Fernon.

This brought the Championships back on schedule with the semi-finals bringing together four previous Champions ~ 2011 Champion, Jessica Evans playing 2009 Champion Cerys Jenkins in game 1 with 2010 Champion Danielle Cobley and Lauren Hillier [who had been Champion several times as Lauren Diggle] in game 2.

Again the games went with the seeding to bring Jessica Evans and Lauren Hillier together for the Final. There Lauren, who plays off +1, regained the trophy, remarkably just ten weeks after giving birth to son Milo.

In the Bronze Division the unfinished second round games saw the following results:
Janet Cavaciuti beat Pauline Forbes
Linda Young beat Beryl Young
Rosemary Ford beat Noelyn Allen
Ruth Stafford beat Chris Jones

In the Semi- finals County Junior Organiser Janet Cavaciuti just pipped Linda Young with the last putt of the game and Rosemary Ford beat Ruth Stafford to book her place in the Bronze Final which is to be played at St. Mellons on Tuesday with a Tee time of 9.00 a.m.

The Paton Cup for the best team at the Championships based on the four best Nett scores in either division in the qualifying rounds was won for the second year running by Dewstow, with the quartet of Catherine Nutley, Patricia Fernon, Deborah Hudson and Kate Stevens and a total of 303.

Reminders
Buggies:
May only be used in certain Competitions when supported by a current Doctor's Medical Certificate.
Please note that they may
NOT be used in the County Championships.

Lena Davidson

As most probably know, Lena Davidson has retired as County Secretary after serving for twenty years on the County Committee, the last ten of them as Secretary.

To mark the occasion Libby Hutchings organised a 'surprise' retirement party for her at Llanwern Golf Club on 16th November. This was very well attended by ladies, and some gentlemen, from many of the County Clubs. Lena said she was quite overwhealmed by the support and felt very humble. She would like to thank all who came and, in particular, Libby for organising the event and Les Dodd, Secretary at Pontypool Golf Club, for the lovely poem he recited for her..

The County Luncheon
was held at Dewstow G.C. on 30th August with the rather disppointing number of 36 ladies attending, 26 of them from the home club. The Captain thanked those who did come for supporting the Lunch event, and everyone was delightfully entertained by Bethan Keeble who gave a piano recital. Bethan, who is studying music at Cardiff university with the aim of becoming a professional musician also uses her music for therapy. Her principal instrument is the Oboe but her recital at the lunch showed that she could also play a mean piano.

To Chris Rossiter and Roberta Budd of Newport Golf Club, who, having won the Regional Final of The Coronation Foursomes held at Cradoc Golf Club with 39 points, qualified for the National Final of the event which was held over the Eden Course at St. Andrews where they gained a very creditable fourth place with 31 points.
