County Championships
The County Championships were held in the traditional slot of Easter week although the overnight frost and the bitter Easterly wind made it seem more like Christmas than Easter. However 40 entrants in each of the two divisions braved the cold for the Stroke play Qualifiers, with the Bronze Division being held at Monmouth Golf Club and the Silver Division at Woodlake Park. The 16 best gross scores at Monmouth then joined their silver division colleagues at Woodlake Park Golf Club for the match play stages.
At Monmouth the best Nett Score and the Coronation Medal was won by Sarah Payne of Newport Golf Club with Joan Bool of Bryn Meadows second. Beryl Young of St. Pierre Golf Club achieved the best gross score and led the sixteen qualifiers to Woodlake Park as top seed. The sixteen included two members of the County Junior Squad and both were destined to make a mark.
In the first round, at the bottom of the draw, Sophie Madsen of St. Mellons Golf Club, six weeks before her 14th birthday, beat the number 2 seed Sarah Payne by 2 & 1 to move into the quarter final where she then lost by 3 & 2 to Patricia John of Newport Golf Club. Patricia then beat Sue Edwards of Monmouth Golf Club by 3 & 2 to get to the Final.
At the top of the draw, top seed Beryl Young reached the Semi Final with wins by 4 & 2 over Claire Bartlett of Pontnewydd Golf Club and by 2 up over Janice Williams of Newport Golf Club. In the Semi Final Beryl came up against the other Junior, 14 year old Rhian Morgan of St. Pierre Golf Club, and it was Rhian who came out on top with a 3 & 2 win. Rhian then kept up her good form to beat Patricia by 5 & 4 and become Bronze Division Champion.
In the Silver Division Stroke play Qualifying round at Woodlake Park, the best gross and number one seed for the Match play stages was Welsh International Jessica Evans of Newport Golf Club with Danielle Cobley of Pontnewydd Golf Club second. Carolyn Pritchard of Llanwern Golf Club won the prize for best Nett , with Jane Paske of Woodlake Park second and Welsh Senior International Christine Harries from Llanwern Golf Club, won the prize for the best Gross score by a Senior Lady.
The match play event saw the Semi final stage reached by 3 past Champions:
Jessica Evans who beat County Selector Catherine Nutley of Dewstow Golf Club by 4 & 3 and Welsh Senior International Patricia Fernon, also of Dewstow Golf Club by 2 up;
Cerys Jenkins of Bryn Meadow Golf Club who beat Caroline Cole of Monmouthshire Golf Club and Carolyn Pritchard of Llanwern Golf Club by 5 & 3;
and Danielle Cobley who beat Jessica Gabriel of Pontypool Golf Club by 5 & 4 and Rhiannon Thomas of St. Pierre Golf Club by 2 up.
They were joined by 15 year old Jordan Ryan of Newport Golf Club who had done excellently by beating Jo. Waite of St. Mellons Golf Club by 5 & 3 and Chris Harries by 5 & 4.
Both Semi Final matches ended in 2 & 1 wins, for Jessica over Jordan and Danielle over Cerys. That was also the score in the final with Jessica clinching victory to become Champion for the second time in 3 years.
However Danielle also had something to celebrate ~ it was her 21st birthday!
The Barbara Francis Memorial Trophy for the best performance at the Championships by a girl in the County Junior Squad was won by Rhian Morgan
The Paton Cup, awarded to the club with the four best Nett scores in the Stroke play Stages of the Championship was won by Newport Golf Club with the scores of Jessica Evans, Jordan Ryan, Sarah Payne and Emma Miller being the ones to count.

We are the Champions!

L to R: Cerys Jenkins, Rhiannon Thomas, Chris Harries,Jessica Evans, Angharad Evans, Lauren Hillier, Ann Booth [Captain] & Patricia Fernon flying the flag for Monmouthshire.
Sunday, 23rd September at Ashburnham was a cold, very wet and extremely windy day but, never the less, it turned out to be 'Red Letter' day for Monmouthshire Ladies Golf as we beat last years winners, Mid Wales, to become the Welsh Ladies' County Champions for the first time!
In the morning Foursomes, the pairing of Lauren Hillier and Angharad Evans got the first point on the board with a 3 & 1 win but the other two games were lost to leave the lunchtime score 2 - 1 to Mid Wales.
The rain stopped for a short while during the afternoon singles but then came back with a vengeance together with a near gale force wind off the sea. However, as they had done in the last round against Glamorgan, the Monmouthshire ladies coped better with the elements than their Mid Wales opponents as the first four games produced wins by 6 & 4 for Lauren Hillier, by 7 & 6 for Jessica Evans, by 7 & 6 for Rhiannon Thomas and by 4 & 2 for Chris Harries to achieve the magic, winning, 5 point mark, so the final two games were conceded to allow the ladies to escape what were by now the worse conditions of the day and return to the comfort of the Clubhouse.
Despite the dark clouds at Ashburnham, with three of the winning team still teenagers, two in their twenties and two Welsh Ladies' Senior Internationals, the future looks bright for
Monmouthshire Ladies Golf!

For the second consecutive year we are through to the final of the
Welsh Ladies County Championships!
This is to be held at Ashburnham Golf Club on Sunday 23rd September
and , as last year, our opponents will be Mid Wales.

This win set up the game with Glamorgan held at Southerndown G.C. on 18th July as a decider and,as County Captain Ann Booth reported," In horrendous conditions the team played with great commitment and hung in there to win the match 5 - 4", to clinch the place in the Final.

County Championship
Tuesday 17/4/12
The Bronze Division Final between Janet Cavaciuti of Woodlake Park and Rosemary Ford of Newport was played in excellent spirit and in mainly fine but rather breezy conditions. It was a close and fluctuating game with never more than one hole in it either way until Janet won on the 17th green.
The presentations of the trophies to both Janet and Rosemary and also to Jordan Ryan of Newport who was the winner of the Barbara Francis Memorial Trophy for Junior Squad members, but who was on holiday at the time of the presentations on Friday, will be made at the beginning of the next Committee Meeting at The Parc Golf Club at 7.00 p.m. on Tuesday 15th May.
Friday 13/4/12
After the storms on the previous afternoon, Friday [13th!!] turned out to be a much better day with warm sunshine after a rather chilly 7.15 a.m. start and some excellent golf was played on a course that had stood up remarkably well to the weather.
In the Silver Division the results of the unfinished second round matches saw all four of the top seeds win their games with Jessica Evans winning against Rhiannon Thomas, Cerys Jenkins overcoming County Captain Ann Booth, Danielle Cobley beating Jo. Waite and Lauren Hillier winning against Patricia Fernon.
This brought the Championships back on schedule with the semi-finals bringing together four previous Champions ~ 2011 Champion, Jessica Evans playing 2009 Champion Cerys Jenkins in game 1 with 2010 Champion Danielle Cobley and Lauren Hillier [who had been Champion several times as Lauren Diggle] in game 2.
Again the games went with the seeding to bring Jessica Evans and Lauren Hillier together for the Final. There Lauren, who plays off +1, regained the trophy, remarkably just ten weeks after giving birth to son Milo.
In the Bronze Division the unfinished second round games saw the following results:
Janet Cavaciuti beat Pauline Forbes
Linda Young beat Beryl Young
Rosemary Ford beat Noelyn Allen
Ruth Stafford beat Chris Jones
In the Semi- finals County Junior Organiser Janet Cavaciuti just pipped Linda Young with the last putt of the game and Rosemary Ford beat Ruth Stafford to book her place in the Bronze Final which is to be played at St. Mellons on Tuesday with a Tee time of 9.00 a.m.
The Paton Cup for the best team at the Championships based on the four best Nett scores in either division in the qualifying rounds was won for the second year running by Dewstow, with the quartet of Catherine Nutley, Patricia Fernon, Deborah Hudson and Kate Stevens and a total of 303.

Reminders
Buggies:
May only be used in certain Competitions when supported by a current Doctor's Medical Certificate.
Please note that they may NOT be used in the County Championships.
Measuring devices
The Golf Union of Wales have decided that the use of distance measuring devices [DMDs]
will be permitted in all GUW Championships and Events.
It was therefore decided at the County Meeting held at The Parc G.C. on 7th February that Monmouthshire Ladies should follow suit and allow DMDs in County Competitions subject to the following regulation:
A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect her play (eg gradient, windspeed, temperature etc) the player is in breach of Rule 14-3 for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional function is actually used.

Sue Turner R.I.P.
Wales Ladies Golf Captain, Sue Turner, the Manager of the Great Britain & Ireland team
for this year’s Curtis Cup match, passed away on 14th February aged 50 after battling illness since last autumn. Ladies' golf in both Wales and Great Britian will be much poorer with her passing.

Lena Davidson
As most probably know, Lena Davidson has retired as County Secretary after serving for twenty years on the County Committee, the last ten of them as Secretary.
To mark the occasion Libby Hutchings organised a 'surprise' retirement party for her at Llanwern Golf Club on 16th November. This was very well attended by ladies, and some gentlemen, from many of the County Clubs. Lena said she was quite overwhealmed by the support and felt very humble. She would like to thank all who came and, in particular, Libby for organising the event and Les Dodd, Secretary at Pontypool Golf Club, for the lovely poem he recited for her..

Some of the Attendees
The County Luncheon
was held at Dewstow G.C. on 30th August with the rather disppointing number of 36 ladies attending, 26 of them from the home club. The Captain thanked those who did come for supporting the Lunch event, and everyone was delightfully entertained by Bethan Keeble who gave a piano recital. Bethan, who is studying music at Cardiff university with the aim of becoming a professional musician also uses her music for therapy. Her principal instrument is the Oboe but her recital at the lunch showed that she could also play a mean piano.

Congratulations:
To Christine Harries of Llanwern Golf Club who is the Welsh Senior Ladies Champion for 2011 after clinching the title at Abergele Golf Club in North Wales. Chris carded rounds of 76 & 78 against the course par of 74 to finish on + 6 and win by one shot from Jane Rees of Hendon in a field that included former Curtis Cup player Vikki Thomas. She has also been selected to play for Wales in the Senior Ladies Home International Matches at Tramor Golf Club in Ireland.
To Chris Rossiter and Roberta Budd of Newport Golf Club, who, having won the Regional Final of The Coronation Foursomes held at Cradoc Golf Club with 39 points, qualified for the National Final of the event which was held over the Eden Course at St. Andrews where they gained a very creditable fourth place with 31 points.
