Guinirvit
Allèe Couverte
Porz Guen, Plouescat, Finistère

Follow the main road NE from Lesneven (D125) and at Plouescat take the left turn signed to Porz Guen. After a couple of km watch for a left turn that only has a small sign to the village and there is also a sign to the tomb. A little further there is another left turn towards the sea where there is parking near the tomb.

This tomb, an allèe couverte, a rectangular chamber with no passage, is right on the beach and can only be seen fully at low tide. There are small boats moored beside it.

It faces southwest and the row of kerbstones survive in good condition around the chamber and most of the chamber stones are still standing. No capstones remain but it is a very good site as well as being unusual in that you don’t see many with seaweed and barnacles on them. This shows how much the sea level has risen here. We saw a sign earlier explaining that the area of coast was known as the Coast of Abers – this means flooded valleys like fjords. Once this tomb faced down into a low valley with a river in it instead of the sea.

The chamber is rectangular and measures about 10 by 1.5m (30 by 5ft) with the entrance to the NE where there is a gap in the stones. Towards the sea are a couple of stones that may represent the remains of a forecourt. Objects have been washed up here such as pottery fragments, arrowheads and flint tools.
