Porspoder, Finistère

Porspoder is on the west coast of Finistère – the “Coast of Legends”. The small coast road, the D27, is a pleasant drive as the scenery is wonderful. Just beyond the village of Porspoder is a turning on the left for the Saint Laurent peninsula. After 500m is a carpark.

We walked right round the peninsula which was extremely pleasant and the only standing stones we found were to the southern edge as shown below.

Burl mentions a rectangular enclosure and a few standing stones to the NE so I think this must be it except it is the SW.

Beside a small standing stone 1.2m (4ft) near some old seaweed burning houses are a few low stones in the brambles in the vague shape of a corner of a rectangle. Towards the cliff about 30m away are two larger stones reaching around 2m and 2.4m (6 and 8ft) and by them is a larger fallen stone about 3m (10ft) long. The seaweed houses were used to extract iodine in the old days.

The stones in the brambles

It takes about an hour to stroll round this peninsula, and if the weather is good, it is an excellent walk.
