Penvern, Côte du Nord

Follow the coast road north from Trébeurden and when you reach Penvern take the right turn signed to Pleumer-Bodou. Follow the road for about 0.5km and take a left turn that is signed to the stone. Follow this lane, keep left at a fork, and you will come to a parking space beside the stone.

This is a huge standing stone that has been carved with early Christian symbols as well as having the addition of a small cross added on the top.

It is an 8.1m (about 25ft) high granite slab that has been smoothed on the side that has the carvings. The back face has several deep flutes running down it that seem natural.

The carvings were done in 1674 when a chapel was built nearby and they are very well executed. They include a variety of symbols including a sun and moon with human faces either side of Mary near the top and below are various masons tools.
