Chűn Quoit
Burial Chamber
SW 402 339

From the B3306 coast road heading from St Just just after the village of Morvah take the right turn signed Madron and take a right at the next junction. After ˝ mile there is a right turn signed Chun Castle. Follow this lane to the farm. We parked just before the farm and asked the farmer. (It doesn’t seem to be a public footpath but some cars seemed to park just past the farm by some stones) You have to walk uphill towards the gorse, there is a stone with a sign on it halfway up the field. Follow the narrow path through the gorse up the hill and you come to the hillfort first then on to the burial chamber.

The hillfort entrance

From here there are excellent views all round. It is an elegant structure with a simple rectangular chamber. It is surrounded by the traces of a mound about 13m diameter with some stones on the north of it like kerbstones.

View of the chamber and mound

The capstone is roughly circular with the top rounded, it is about 3 metres across and about 800mm (2.5ft) thick supported on three uprights. A fourth stone on the south side is not in contact with the capstone and completes the box-shaped tomb. All four stones are about 1.6m high.

The name of the site is derived from the Cornish to mean “The house on the downs”
