Claughreid
Stone Circle
NX 517 560  Kirkcudbrightshire

From Cairnholy it is a 1.25 mile walk north to the circle. However from the Cairnholy Cairns if you drive back to the A75 and turn right and drive on for a couple of miles. Take the right turn signed Carsluith then after ½ mile take the right turn signed Bagbie. Continue up this lane, you will see a tall standing stone about 300m into a field near a barn just before a steep bend. We didn’t explore this as the field was deep in mud and cows. Drive on towards the farm at Cambret. Here the road is private so park somewhere safe near the trees.

Walk to the farm and go through a gate by the footpath sign and head SE, crossing a stream then through another gate. Head uphill following the track to another gate. Carry on and when the path starts to go downhill and you see a wall ahead look to the left (east) for signs of the centre stone about 100m from the path.

The circle is in an attractive setting and consists of nine small granite stones mostly under 2' (0.6m) high forming a circle about 10m diameter surrounding a boulder almost 5.5ft (1.5m) long. Further uphill to the east is a large erratic boulder. This is one of several circles with centre stones in SW Scotland.

Caulside Burn circle is about 1.5 miles NE from the Claughreid circle. For details see Caulside Burn.
