We planned a short visit to Ireland in summer 2005 and arrived early morning in Dublin so thought it was a good idea to visit Newgrange first before the hordes arrived as it was before the school holidays started. However when we got there it was locked up tight and a sign said the “tours” were fully booked for that day. So we headed south basically to head around the coast to Cork and Kerry then up to Galway and back over to Dublin. The hyperlinks to sites we visited at the bottom of the Ireland pages are in the order we went to them.

Piper Stones
Stone Circle
Wicklow

This is easily found as it is signed on the N81 about 30 miles south of Dublin. Just after a large reservoir you come to Hollywood, about 1.5 miles further there is a stopping place on the left. Go through the gap by the gate and head to the gorse where there is an info board about the site. The circle is on the top of a hill ahead.

The circle is made up of 14 large granite stones, the tallest is around 1.8m high and about 40m to the NE is a large granite boulder from which the circle is named being the Piper and the stones the dancers. The top of this outlier has possible cupmarks and 2 grooves forming a cross shape cut into the granite that appear to be manmade.
