County Clare

The Burren
We visited a few of the numerous burial chambers on the Burren in county clare. It is probably best to get hold of the OS map number 51 to select your routes. Some are signed but many are not and some seem impossible to reach. The grid references refer to this map.

Parknabinnia
Burial Chamber
51/264 936

This is easily found on the lane just NW of Killinaboy. It is signed and there is a parking space. This is a wedge tomb and sits on a low cairn. The capstone is about 3 metres in length and it is made up of local limestone slabs.

Many of the tombs have their closing stones still in place and most have the top corners removed as small access openings similar to some of the Brittany tombs.

Leaba
Burial Chamber
51/274 958

Carry on further north on this lane to come to this tomb. This is also signed and is worth a visit. There are several slabs standing around this tomb as outer stones.

Poulnabrone
Burial Chamber
51/236 004

This is signed on the R480 and is part of the coach tour route so can get very busy. It is built on the bare limestone pavement and has tall portal stones holding the thin capstone nearly 1.8m (6ft) high.

Berneens
Burial Chamber
51/230 022

This is a neat box-like tomb beside the road north of Poulnabrone.
