Milfield Henge
Henge
NT 939 335

The village of Milfield is on the A697 quite near to the stone circles at Duddo and Hethpool. The henge can be found by taking the right turn towards Doddington on a minor road. It is just a short distance from the village and there is a large carpark beside it.

The henge has been reconstructed and at the time of our visit huts were being constructed making it an archaeological trail. This site has been extensively excavated and burnt material from inside the henge has been dated as early Bronze Age.

A stone lined pit was found that had been later filled in but one of the stones was cupmarked. Wooden posts have been placed inside and outside the henge to recreate the appearance of the structure and stones inside mark what could be the positions of cists.

As the temperature was in negative figures we didn’t stay as long as we wanted. A guide book about the site is available at the local cafe.
