Three
Kings This site is in the Kielder Forest among the trees. On the A68 to Jedburgh after you enter the forest you will come to a forest drive sign. Take this and park. The best way to find this circle is to walk to the track that is south of the circle on the map and you will come to a grassy footpath that leads to it.
This is the second Four Poster in Northumberland, the other being the Goatstones. The four stones form a circle just 4.4m (14ft) diameter, the tallest is to the SSW and reaches just 1.4m (just under 4.75ft) The name comes from the legend that the stones marked the graves of long dead kings and is also known as the “Three Kings of Denmark.” Three stones stand and one has fallen.
In
the centre of the ring is a cairn, now ruined. It was excavated in 1971
and was found to have been previously disturbed and all that remained was
a flint scraper. This is an attractive site with excellent views and it is
a pleasant walk getting to it. |
