Achmore
Stone Circle
NB 318 292

Drive towards Stornoway on the A858 but do not take the left fork (the single track road) and instead drive on into the village of Achmore. Park about ¼ mile after the junction where there is a layby on the left. Walk NE uphill to the right of the electric poles and the site is on the top. (It is not steep)

This is the remains of a large circle that was discovered by peat cutters in the 1930s but never reported until 1981 when Callanish was being excavated and the stones were mentioned. Peat cutting had unearthed 11 stones and Margaret Curtis did most of the investigation on the site. By surveying the site and exploring areas of uncut peat with probes further stones were located. The circle has a diameter of 41m with about 15 stones exposed now as well as groups of packing stones around the circumference. Margaret Curtis has produced a very useful leaflet on this and other sites with a site plan that is helpful in tracing the stones around the circle. (Leaflets are in the tourist offices for 50p)

Some of the stones were under water when we visited and it was raining on and off. The site is awaiting being scheduled as an Ancient Monument. In a couple of places you can see the pieces of stones that have been broken and laid on the ground as though they will be restored sometime in the future.
