Callanish V

This is a short walk that takes in three more Callanish sites as originally recorded by Thom and later the Glasgow University team survey in 1974. These are sites VII, V and IX. Park in a small layby opposite some sheep pens very near to Callanish IV on the B8011. Go through the gate that leads up to the sheep pens and take the right fork between them.

Thom believed this was a “ring of stones” just 15m SSE of the ruined beehive hut just beside the sheep pens. It is now thought to be the remains of a kale yard belonging to the hut. The hut was in the process of restoration when we visited and stones were scattered about so the “structure” was not too clear.

From the sheep pens look to the SE horizon and you should see the stones ahead. Go over the stile and cross the gently rising peat moor to reach them.

This is quite an interesting site astronomically and many more stones might be under the peat here. We could see two rows, the first with three standing and one fallen lead to a further fallen stone in line with a boulder to the SE. At the second fallen stone is another row to the NE with 3 or 4 stones. Both these are accepted as accurate lunar lines.

From the rows go over the barbed wire fence just to the south and go uphill for about 150m to reach the top.

Here you will see two fallen slabs about 1.3m (4.5ft) long. Beside them are other smaller slabs and on the top is a “modern” cairn.
