Clach Mhic Leoid “Macleod’s Stone” Standing stone NG 040 972 Just a little further along the A859 from Horgabost is a parking space on the right side of the road alongside the end of a sandy beach. Park here and walk along the beach, you will see the tall stone ahead on the skyline.
The stone is about 3m (10ft) tall and the packing stones as well as some others can be seen around the base. To the NW is the island of Taransay where there is another, but smaller stone. From this stone the sun sets exactly due west over St Kilda some 60km away at the equinoxes. |
