Cleitreabhal Chambered Cairn NF 749 713 On the A865 on the west coast of North Uist take the right turn at the MoD sign to South Clettraval where the TV masts and military radar station or whatever are on the top of the mountain. This tarmac lane takes you right to the top for excellent views for miles and there is a parking space opposite a chambered tomb. (The next turn on the right from the main road goes to the RSPB reserve where there is an excellent walk to the coast where we saw otters and seals, about 3 miles, and there is a WC there)

This burial chamber is unique for the Western Isles as it is a “Clyde” type chamber. It is not in fantastic condition but you can make out the design. Many of the stones have been robbed to build the Iron Age wheelhouse beside it. To the east are possibly some of the remaining forecourt stones. The long passage is roughly east/west but the chamber has been damaged and has stones missing. A little down the hill is a standing stone and further still is another chamber. |
