Kingarth
Stone Circle
NS 082 557

Drive south on the A844 and just before you come to Kingarth you will see a golf course on the right, then come to a turning on the right to St Blane’s church, take this and drive down the road for about ˝ mile. There is a small “Stone Circle” sign and a track into the forest on the left. Park and walk down the track for a few metres and you will see the stones among the bracken on the right.

There are three stones here, two are huge, in a wide arc. The original circle would have been very large. The first stone is an unusually shaped slab of sandstone conglomerate reaching about 2.4m (8ft) in height and the second is a huge block a little taller.

The two large stones

The third is smaller, about 1.2m but is raised up on a mound. We couldn’t find more stones in the trees but there are a few mounds in the bracken. About ˝ mile to the SW of the stones are three more standing stones in a field, we didn’t visit these as a farmer was “muck spreading” there!
