Kyles Lodge Cupmarks (Possible) NF 996 877 Carry on towards Leverburgh on the A859 and about 2 miles after passing the long beach at Scarista look for a lane on the right to Kyles Lodge on the OS map, there is no sign to it but it has a white gate and is the right turn before coming to Leverburgh. There is nowhere to park on the main road but there is just room to park before you get to the sea at a sharp bend. Walk to the shore and keep to the seaward side of the fence and follow the edge of the grass for 100m beyond the garden to where a stone wall leads down to the shore at a small headland in the direction of the buoy in the water. The cupmarks are on the left end of the headland on a smooth part of the black rocks between the yellow lichen and the barnacles. Do not go in rough weather or at high tide.
Small
cupmarks on the left and possible modern large ones on the right |

There
are about 34 cupmarks about 60-240mm (2-10 inches) across and between
10-50mm (½ -2 inches) deep. The smaller ones are believed to be
prehistoric but the larger ones are thought to be medieval and were used
to hold fishing bait in living memory. |
