2002
We spent five weeks in the summer of 2002 visiting several islands and re-visiting some sites that had been closed during the foot and mouth crisis. We headed to Skye then took the ferry to Lewis where there are some outstanding sites then headed down to Harris before taking the ferry to North Uist.
Callanish on Lewis Causeways connect North Uist, Benbecula and South Uist but the ferry route to Mallaig has stopped so we had to backtrack and go to Mull via Skye. From Mull we took the ferry to Oban that gave us the opportunity of re-visiting the Kilmartin Valley sites that had been closed before heading on to Bute. We couldn’t resist the chance of looking for the relatively recently discovered carvings at Ballochmyle in Ayreshire on the way home with just a minor detour from the motorway.
