Standing Stone

This attractive standing stone was ½ mile along the beach where we camped when visiting South Uist. Take the right turn off the main road towards Stoneybridge and when the tarmac road reaches the coast look for a grassy track that leads to the shore. Park here and you can see the stone on the skyline to the south. Walk along the beach to reach it.
This is an unusual shape and must have been significant. There are few megalithic sites on the island. It is a thin gneiss pillar about 1.6m high set on a low mound. The photo to the north shows the bay where seals were on the rocks and our van was on the shore.
