In Southwest Tunisia
the landscapes are often spectacular. The oasis towns of Tozeur and
Douz
border a vast salt lake, beyond it is the Sahara. Travel to the
oases is
quite easy from the north by long distance shared taxis called louages.
They go when they are full and are fast and cheap. (avoid taking a louage
on the east coast highway south from Sousse as they are suicidal – take
the train instead on this route) To get to Tozeur from
Sousse or the airport travel in the morning as you have to change at Gafsa
(256km) and the very ordinary hotel there is expensive. Onwards to Tozeur
from here is 93km through ever increasing scenic landscapes.
