During the Foot and Mouth crisis there are few sites to visit or even paths open to walk. During the May Bank Holiday we decided to camp in Beddgelert Forest where some forest trails were open and took the opportunity to try to see some nearby sites, including a modern circle at Llanrwst at SH 799 614. North of Beddgelert take the B4418 west for beautiful views across the mountains, then at Penygroes turn left then take the right at a new roundabout after a petrol station. This road meets the A499 coast road. At the junction there are some gates on the right at the end of a high wall where you can see a large standing stone 100 metres down the track. As it is farmland you can’t go in.
Standing Stone SH 445 542 Just back up the lane where the wall starts is another smaller stone in a field and there seemed others but all need to be seen on foot, when this is allowed, as they are in fields.

Burial
Chamber Drive southwest on the
A499 for a couple of miles and take the left at a crossroads marked
unsuitable for large vehicles. After a couple of hundred metres you will
come to a farm track on the right. In a field to the left you can see a
small burial chamber with a slipped capstone. Again this is in a field but
you can see it from the gate.

Beddgelert Forest Campsite This is a pleasant Forest Enterprise campsite in the forest. You can camp beside a stream feeding into the River Colwyn and there are several miles of forest walks open during the foot and mouth crisis. All around Snowdon is still no parking and the few tracks to the summit open do not allow dogs yet. (May). The walk up to the little lake in the hills is very pleasant.
