Stone
Circles From Ambleside take the
A593 west towards Skelwith Bridge then turn right towards Little Langdale
and continue for about 15 miles towards Gosforth. Turn right to the
village of Boot and park. When we visited in mid-December the road was
closed half way along as it was covered in ice so we had to turn back and
come from the other side of the pass in the west. From this side the
village of Boot is about 3 miles from Eskdale Green. There is very limited
parking here so you might have to park at the junction where you turn off
to Boot. Walk past the pub and over a stone bridge and through a gate. Take
care to follow the correct path or you could go up the wrong mountain.
From the gate head upwards to the right and the path climbs steeply in
zigzags uphill beside a stone wall. Continue on the footpath through the
abandoned huts on the rise. Head due north and look for a small hill on
the left, climb up this and Brat’s Hill circle will be seen below. (You
could miss it if you keep to the path just here)
View of Brat's Hill circle with White Moss in the distance This is the first of five stone circles here. Brat’s Hill is the largest at about 100 ft (31 metres) across. The tallest stone is in the south and is about 1 metre high. Inside the circle are five cairns, four to the west and one to the east. Each of the cairns have 14 kerbstones. The stones are granite. From this site you can see the two circles at White Moss ahead to the north west. The other circles in this complex are White Moss and Low Longrigg
