Stone Circle
Castlerigg
NY 291 236

Castlerigg is just 1.5 miles east from Keswick and clearly signposted from the town. If you are coming from the A591 from the south watch for an old faded sign to the circle and take the right turn into a lane, go to the end and park in the layby.

View of the entrance

This is believed to be possibly one of the first stone circles in Europe and might have been built as early as 3200BC. The site is in a beautiful location surrounded by mountains. There are 38 slate stones remaining ranging from 3 to 5 feet (1 – 1.5 metres) high in a ring almost 100 feet (30 metres) in diameter.

View to the north through the entrance

In the north is a wide entrance with the two of the tallest stones either side of it over 5½  feet ( 1.6 metres) high. In the southeast of the circle is an unusual rectangle of stones with a large stone in the corner which is about 8 feet (2.4 metres) tall. By the stile in the southwest is a stone which was probably once in the circle.
