Cerrig Duon
Stone Circle
SN 851 206

Take the lane south from Trecastle by the Coaching Inn towards Glyntawe and after about 1.5 miles turn left signed Abercraf. Continue for about 4 miles and look for a space to park on the right just after a small stone side of a bridge over a tributary stream  You will see the large stone before you reach the site but when you get there the stone is not visible from the road. (If you come the other way from the A4067 turn left at Glyntawe and go for about 2 miles and you will see the stone well before you reach the bridge) The only problem is that it is on the other side of the river Tawe, but this is not very deep especially near the bridge. It is just a short walk up the gentle slope to the flat ridge on the valley side

Maen Mawr three stone arrangement and the circle beyond

This is a complex of stone circle, avenue and three stone row. Cerrig Duon means “black rock” and the ring is an oval about 20 by 18m. The stones are sandstone and the tallest only reaches 0.6m (2ft) and we counted 21.

9m to the NNE is a large block named Maen Mawr – the “huge stone”. This is almost 2m high and is a thick block almost 1.3m wide weighing up to 9 tons. In line with it are two small stones just to the NNE.

The small stones of the circle

Also there is an avenue of very small stones almost hidden in the grass 14m east of the circle with their flat faces placed along the line. These lead down the hillside towards the river.
