The sites in Clocaenog Forest are very vague and indistinct, really only worth a visit if you plan to go to the Llyn Brenig Group in the northwest section of this huge forest beside the reservoir which are certainly worth seeing. Or if you just want a pleasant walk in the woods.

Cairn/Monument
SJ 065 557

The first “site” we visited was mainly to give the dogs a walk after driving here. Park in a layby at SJ 065 557 where a signpost labelled Pincyn Llys points SE along a footpath. The trail climbs gently to the highest point in this section of the woods where you will see a tall monument where Lord Bagot “erected this pile of stones in 1830.” We couldn’t find a trace of the cairn marked on the map here so assume this is where he got his “pile of stones.” The monument seems to be built on a raised bank, possibly the original cairn.

Drive southwest for a couple of miles and turn right then immediately left at the crossroads. Park here on the left in a layby and walk about 100 metres down the lane. Just on the left there is  the remains of a cairn circle. It isn’t marked on the map but is classified a cairn circle on the CARN database. It has a raised bank which is completely overgrown but a few large stones can be found among the heather and moss clumps. The bank is about 1 metre high and 2 metres wide and the circle is around 12 metres diameter.

A second even vaguer circle can be found just over ¼ mile further down the lane marked as a tumulus on the map. Stop by the second forestry track on the left and among the tree stumps, brambles and bracken there is a small mound with three large stones visible. New trees have been planted around but not on it. A long low mound runs WSW/NNE along the northwest face of this 16 metre diameter circle. The low central mound has a hollow in the centre.

Continue on down this picturesque lane for about 6 miles and turn left to Llyn Brenig on the B4501 to visit the Brenig Group.
