Stone Circle

Perhaps it was the wonderful weather, beautiful scenery or maybe I’d only got a couple of days left before going back to work, but this was a fantastic site to visit. It is not in Burl and ages ago I’d noted it down from somewhere but just re-discovered it when I got Frances Lynch’s book out of the library. Take the A493 west from Machynlleth and drive through Pennal and Cwrt. Take the next right signed Happy Valley and after a mile on this narrow road you come out of the trees. Look for a house on the right and park nearby where there is space by some gates. Walk uphill along the track that starts on the left side of the house. Go through three gates and when you reach the third you will see the circle ahead on a raised rocky outcrop.

The approach to the circle

This was an incredibly peaceful place and we sat here for a long time enjoying the atmosphere and calm. The only sound was the occasional breeze blowing through the long grass.

It is quite a small circle, only 8m across, consisting of 5 uprights, 2 stumps to the north and 2 other stones that might have fallen from the rocks just above the site. Two of the upright stones have flat tops, these are to the NNW and NE.

On higher ground above the outcrop to the north is a large natural stone on the top of a crag with quartz in it that might have been significant. The views all around are beautiful.
