Stone Circle
NY 640 082

From Shap take the B6261 to Orton. After entering this village turn left and carry on over some crossroads and continue past a left turn to Scarside. Stop at the next lane on the left. Walk a few hundred yards down the lane and the large circle will be seen over a tall wall, which luckily has stepping stones in it (be careful as the wall is loose).

Most of the stones of this circle have fallen and they are quite large. We counted 33 granite and one limestone boulders in this circle. One pointed stone to the NE appears to line up with a distant hilltop cairn. The circle is oval shaped, 146 by 123 feet (44.5 by 37.5 metres) and built on a low bank. It is in an attractive and peaceful setting.

From here we headed to Dent, near Sedbergh, where there is a campsite open all year round and the village pub has food. The only problem we had was that the water bottle froze in the night leading to difficulties with morning coffee.
