Iron Hill Group near Oddendale.

This is a very pleasant walk around Oddendale with some interesting sites to see on the way.

Iron Hill
Cairn Circle
NY 596 148

Follow the road from Castlehowe south towards Oddendale. Where the road bends sharply left then right at the end of the trees to make way for the expansion of the quarry workings park at the right bend on the verge. A footpath here between two walls leads up to Iron Hill where there is a cairn and a cairn circle.

You first come to a cairn with a ring of stones around it to the left of the footpath. There are eight stones remaining with a ninth one built into the wall that cuts across the centre of the cairn. Eight of these stones are granite. It appears to be an ellipse with the longest axis being about 30 feet (9 metres).

 Iron Hill cairn

About 75 metres to the south is a cairn with nine outer and three inner boulders. One seems to be out of line with the circle. These are also all granite except the one to the west and are between 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) high. The local stone is limestone and just 20 feet (6 metres) west of the circle is a low limestone crag.
