Pentre
Ifan This is well signposted from the main road to the north but coming from Waun Maun we just followed the little lane, forked right and turned left at the crossrads. There are several standing stones on the way but fog, tall hedges and no stopping places prevented much exploration. There is plenty of parking space at this site.
This is a very impressive chamber, the huge capstone is held high on the tips od three large uprights. It looks out over the Nevern Valley and the views are excellent even though the site is fenced in. The forecourt is to the south where two 8ft (2.4m) portal stones have a slightly smaller slab between them at the tomb entrance.
View of the forecourt Several of the forecourt stones survive. The tomb faces downhill where the slope of the original mound can be seen which measured up to 120ft long. The capstone is 5m long and is estimated to weigh over 16 tons. All round the site and by the walls of surrounding fields can be seen several stones looking like capstones and portal stones from other possible chambers that have not survived. |
