Stone Circle
NC 560 029

From the parking space by the dam follow the A839 onwards for about 1.5 miles and you will come to a forest. Park where there is a forest track on both sides of the road. Take the track south (on the left) and walk for about ½ mile. When the path bends steeply to the west (right) the circle is due west from here ¼ mile into the forest. Don’t try this one without a compass as it is easy to get lost. There is no path and the trees are dense, tangled and it is boggy. We found someone had tied orange marker tapes on the trees going in the right direction and rather than giving up we followed these in the end.

We think we found this circle but all the stones were overgrown with moss and it was not very clear with all the fallen trees. (The number of fallen trunks we thought were stones!) Anyway it originally had 10 stones in an ellipse measuring around 29 by 25 metres but we only found 7 fairly small granite like boulders and one large one about 1 metre high on a slightly raised area. This is not an easy site to get to but it is very easy to get lost.

Chambered Tomb
NC 571 019

This is at the other end of the forest track on the way to the Shin River Falls, a salmon leap, forest walk and coffee shop. From the parking space for the circle drive back towards Lairg but take the first right just after leaving the forest. This takes you to the road that runs along the river, turn right into this and when you see a stone bridge ahead park in the forestry entrance just before it. Walk over the bridge and go in the field though a gap in the fence.

The long mound in the field has the remains of a chambered cairn on top and several other small standing stones that could be remains of others. Just to the northeast there is another small round mound. It is a very pleasant spot by the river.
