Auchagallon
Stone Circle
NR 893 346

Continue north for about 1.5 miles from the Machrie parking space and just past the golf course look for a right turn and park up on the grass verge. You will see the circle on the hillside above and it is signed by a farm gate. Follow the track as it winds uphill to reach the site.

The circle is set into the hillside and, unfortunately, is another that is penned in tightly with a wire fence. This really spoils the superb setting overlooking the sea. It is about 50ft (15m) across and has 15 large sandstone slabs remaining that are set into the edge of the cairn. Some of the stones are large and very impressive being up to nearly 8ft (2.4m) tall.

Two of the largest stones flank a large attractively textured recumbent slab. This view features largely on local postcards.
