Cairn O’Get
Chambered Tomb
ND 314 411

A couple of miles further on along the A99 towards Wick will bring you to a sign for this site where you turn left up a narrow lane. Again parking is limited but there is a little more space 100 metres or so further on beside a loch. Go over the stile and follow the marker posts for about ˝ mile. It is not the monument on the distant hilltop!

This site is very similar to the Camster round cairn except that it is uncovered and you can see all the details of construction.

Just like at Camster this has a long passage leading to an antechamber with two standing stones then into the main almost circular chamber with large flat stones around the sides. You can still see in places how the stones were arranged to make the walls curve inwards to take the capstone. The sides of the cairn are grass covered and on the southern edge, the entrance, the forecourt has short “horns” on either side that can be seen now as grassy mounds.

A site well worth the short walk with the added bonus of pleasant views and even a catwalk built to keep your feet dry.

Yarrows Archaeological Trail
A couple of miles further on towards Wick this is signposted. Turn left then next left and it is about 4 miles on. When we arrived the information board was highlighted to say no dogs allowed at any time (not just the foot and mouth crisis) so we had to abandon this as it was too hot to leave them in the van. It also says you must not make drawings or take photos of the farm or farmer. The site includes two long cairns, some chambered cairns and a broch. Leaflets for this are available at Lairg and here but I didn’t spot the small print.
